Alanya Castle (Alanya Kalesi)

Hisariçi Mh, Alanya, Antalya Province, 07400

The Basics

Looming over the sparkling Mediterranean, the 820-foot (250-meter) promontory where Alanya Castle stands has been home to a seafaring community for more than 2,000 years. Much of the castle dates to the 13th century, when Seljuk Sultan Ala’al-Din Kay-Qubadh (Kaikobad) captured Alanya. Visit Alanya Castle for sweeping ocean views, accessible via the Alanya Teleferik cable car or by hiking. You can also admire it from a cruise or as part of an Alanya city tour.

Our first pirate ship experience
I attended with my 12, 9, 6 years children and they loved the experiences whole day!! Myself enjoyed the open water swimming and my eldest boy wanted to stay in the water as much as he can every time ladder went down. Lunch (chicken ) was tasty as well. Youngest boy enjoyed ice cream & melons (optional) which was amazing taste. My daughter especially liked the bubbles in the end :) Friendly atmosphere and highly recommend for anyone.

Alanya Tour with Cable Car, Boat Trip and Lunch at Dimcay
We went on a pirate ship which was an experience. Lovely veiws around the coast. Afterwards we had lunch at a Riverside restaurant with traditional seating. Then on to Alanya where we went on the cable car. Then had some free time which we used to go for a swim to cool off. Was a well organised trip and recommended

Alanya Mini City Tour with Sunset Panaroma
Mixed feelings for this trip as this was booked as a romantic night out for my husbands birthday. After 1 hour of waiting for our driver we were told the trip was cancelled by no fault of the tour operator (police/tourist issue). We rebooked and took all of our 5 kids. The tour abs tour guides were amazing, everyone had a great night and would recommend the tour however you’d think being called a sunset tour you’d see the sunset, well you don’t! Don’t book this tour if you are looking for a romantic night! Recommendation to the tour operator is to stop near a cafe/restaurant and actually watch the sunset. I think this would make a great tour even better especially over a glass of wine! Remember to take a coat as the tour is in an open top jeep bus.

All Inclusive Boat Trip from Alanya
Overall a good experience…a great way to see the beautiful Alayna coastline. If you’re looking for a relaxing (quiet) experience this is not it. Loud music & party atmosphere for most of the trip. Food was average. Great value for the price.

Alanya Mini City Tour with Sunset Panaroma
This tour was far beyond expectations. Staff are funny and entertaining. For the price you pay I wasn’t expecting much but the tour lasted over 4 hours and even though our hotel wasn’t on the usual list that they pick up from, the organisers made sure we were picked up and dropped us off outside of their allocated perimeter.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The larger castle area is free to enter, but you need tickets to explore the Inner Fortress and Ehmedek Castle.

  • There are shops, food options, and bathrooms at the castle.

  • The Alanya Teleferik is not suitable for travelers who use wheelchairs. Walkways have been added to key areas of the castle to make it more accessible.

  • Medieval cannons and rugged fortress walls make Alanya Castle a good choice with historically (or militarily) minded kids. The walkways are stroller-friendly.

How to Get There

Alanya Castle sits in the heart of Alanya. The 2,953-foot-long (900-meter-long) Alanya Teleferik cable car runs from Damlatas at the eastern end of Cleopatra Beach to the Ehmedek Castle area. Bus No. 4 runs directly from the main bus station to the Inner Fortress area, although you might prefer the convenience of a tour with door-to-door transfers.

When to Get There

The Ehmedek and Inner Fortress areas are open until early evening in summer, closing in the late afternoon for winter. If you plan to hike down the hill in summer, visit in the afternoon to avoid the heat of the day; if you plan to hike up, start early.

The Best Historic Sights to See in Alanya

While you might be drawn to Alanya for a relaxing, sunny vacation, you can also dive into its history. As well as building the castle, Sultan Kaikobad developed the harbor, adding the octagonal Red Tower fortress and Alanya Shipyard with its vaulted tunnels. Ottoman-era highlights include the bazaar, historic homes, and 16th-century Suleymaniye Mosque (Suleymaniye Camii) near Ehmedek Castle.
