The Basics

Hike from the base of Pacaya to the lofty shelf just below the smoking cinder cone. The ascent takes about 1.5 hours, and coming down is usually faster. Visitors must hire a guide to accompany them on the climb.

Most hikers go as part of an organized tour; these generally include round-trip transportation from Antigua or Guatemala City, as well as a guide to accompany them during the volcano hike. Full-day tours typically begin with a morning ascent up the volcano followed by lunch and a relaxing afternoon at nearby hot springs. You also can complete part of the ascent on horseback, disembarking for the final walk across the solidified lava fields beneath the cone.

Highly recommend this tour
Both tour guides were amazing! Very informative about the volcano, but also about the culture and history of Guatemala. Prompt pick up at the hotel. Beautiful views. Highly recommend.

Hike to Pacaya Volcano from Antigua
Would highly recommend this tour! About a hour hike up and down and a hour ride from Antigua there and back. Tour guide Catalina and bus driver were really nice! I had a good time. I rode a horse her name was princess! I would do it all over again. Had to pay extra Q50 to hike and Q100 to ride the horse one way.

Private Pacaya Volcano Tour from Antigua
We liked the tour, unluckily it was raining and it was foggy, so we couldn't see anything, no views. The way was easy to go, no hard walking. We come back in October and do the tour again with sunshine!

Pacaya Volcano Day Trip from Antigua
Great tour! My wife and I had an excellent visit to the Volcano. I walked and my wife took a horse. I'm in decent shape and the walk was fairly hard for me. The air is so thin and it gets very steep at the end. Our guides were fun and we had a good time chatting while going up the Volcano (I can speak Spanish). They speak English but don't expect them to be fluent. We were fortunate to see a small eruption. That was really cool. Then we roasted the marshmallows. It was a great time.

Pacaya Volcano Day Trip from Antigua
Wow! What a special day. The hike is tough for a novice like myself, but the views and the experience are so worth it. Who else can say they roasted marshmallows on a volcano! Davis and Luis were great, patient and answered all of the questions we had. You can tell they truly love the mountain and chatting with everyone about the adrenaline rush of the experience. I had a blast! One of the best days that I'll remember forever. Note: Make sure to bring snacks if you get hungry, because this one ends a little after 1 p.m. Also, try to bring a friend because it's a little on the pricey side for just one person, but that also may have just been due to COVID times.

Pacaya Volcano Tour and Hot Springs from Antigua
Beautiful views of the other volcanoes while hiking up to the molten lava flow high on Pacaya. After the amazing hot smoky lava fields, the private time in the spa was the perfect way to clean up and relax our legs.

Pacaya Volcano Tour and Hot Springs from Antigua
The trip up to the volcano was awesome. If a question was asked they answered, but I wish the guides would have been a little more informative along the way. There were horses available as soon as we stepped off the bus and they follow you up in case you get tired of walking. No instructions were given though nor was anything mentioned of cost. The hot springs after the hike were nice but is not Natural springs like we were expecting. Overall still a great trip that our group of 4 enjoyed.

Hike to Pacaya Volcano from Antigua
Got up early to get this early morning experience but it did take 2 hours to get there. Be prepared to be in a vehicle for a long time. The hike was pretty easy and it was a really gorgeous view at the top. Got some nice marshmallows and guide was great. The ride back was also long but fantastic as we got to see Fuego Volcano and it was lively active! Overall I would say good.

Pacaya Volcano Tour and Hot Springs from Guatemala City
I do not wish to jeopardize anyone's job so I cannot specify why I did not rate tour five stars. I did this exact tour July 2018. Have worked in travel industry 50 years. I positively would recommend this tour to all able bodied and conditioned people under 60. Hot springs with lunch part was delightful and well worth what we paid.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Bring cash to pay your entrance fee to Pacaya National Park.

  • Wooden sticks that serve as hiking aids can be bought at the base.

  • Wear shoes with good grip, as volcanic scree (loose rock fragments) can be slippery.

  • While glowing red lava flow used to be commonplace, it is now a rare sight on Pacaya.

How to Get There

Pacaya is about 15 miles (25 kilometers) southeast of Antigua. Driving from Antigua takes about 60–75 minutes. Getting there by public transportation requires transfers, so if you don’t have access to a car, it’s best to go as part of an organized tour.

When to Get There

Pacaya is best hiked during the dry season, from November to April. Start your hike in the early morning or later in the afternoon to avoid trekking during the hottest part of the day. During the rainy season, time your hike for morning when skies are typically clearer.

Ascending Pacaya

The lower part of the trail leads past coffee plantations and through forests, with trees on either side providing welcoming shade. The further up you go, the more barren the landscape becomes, with large parts of the upper slopes carpeted in loose rock fragments ejected during previous eruptions. While these lava fragments have cooled and solidified, small gaps still emit enough heat to cook food or roast a marshmallow.
