Pointe du Hoc

Pointe du Hoc, France

The Basics

Pointe du Hoc rises between Omaha and Utah beaches in Normandy, where American troops landed during the D-Day events of June 1944. Though well-fortified by German troops, the United States Army Ranger Assault Group was able to scale the cliffs—the highest point in the area—and ultimately wrest back control of the coast from German forces. A monument to fallen American troops is situated atop the remains of a German bunker.

Pointe du Hoc features on numerous World War II history tours of Normandy, including full-day trips from Paris that also visit the Normandy beaches, the Normandy American Cemetery, and other pivotal sites.

Great tour, want to go again!
Our guide (Regis) was very personable and shared great information and stories throughout the day. The transportation was comfortable, the sites were well picked, and even many of the driving routes were memorable for their stories. Definitely a good value and I plan on booking this same trip in the future with a different group.

Normandy D-Day Landing Beaches Omaha & Pointe du Hoc
Our tour guide was a history buff and made the experience so much more interesting for our family. The kids learned much more than they did in a class room and came away with a greater appreciation for the sacrifices paid by so many.

Pointe du Hoc,Omaha Beach, American Cemetery - Day trip from Paris to Normandy
Normandy trip was very moving. A “must see” if you ever have a chance. Our Tour Guide was Excellent. Regis had so much knowledge of all this area. He added a lot of history to our tour. I would highly recommend this tour from Viator. A long day: 12 hours but we’ll worth it. Excellent!!

Pointe du Hoc,Omaha Beach, American Cemetery - Day trip from Paris to Normandy
My husband and I booked this day trip while visiting Paris. We have nothing but rave reviews for Regis, our driver and tour guide. He was very knowledgeable at each location, never hurried us, and made sure we had a great experience. We would HIGHLY recommend both this tour, and if you’re lucky, Regis.

Normandy D-Day Beaches Omaha, Pointe du Hoc & American Cemetery
A Normandy visit has been on my bucket list for years. Doru, our guide (hope I correctly spelled your name, Doru!) was great- easy to talk to, INCREDIBLY knowledgeable not only about D-Day but European history, economics, culture, politics... his passion for the topics was palpable. Our tour just so happened to also be my birthday, and Doru insisted on buying me a birthday beer at lunch. :) Doru's photographer Stella also happened to join us this particular day, and was wonderful. We saw Utah beach+ museum, Point du Hoc + museum, Omaha beach, and Cemetery plus cemetery museum. At the day's very end, at the cemetery, my family was ready to depart for the drive back to Paris, but both Doru and Stella suggested we hang on 10 more minutes for the daily 5pm flag lowering ceremony. It was very powerful and highly worth it. The day was long with so many things to see plus the drive to/from Paris, but it met every expectation. Even my wife, who is not one to embrace this much driving on a vacation day, and who is not a history buff like me, said Normandy was a highlight of her week in France. Thank you very much, Doru and Stella!

Normandy D-Day Beaches Omaha, Pointe du Hoc Day Trip from Paris
This is an absolute must-do! This is a very moving trip and wonderfully educational concerning the bravery of American soldiers during Operation Overlord and the storming of Utah Beach and Omaha Beach. This day trip was long on my bucket list, if for nothing more than to pay respects at the American War Memorial and Cemetery at Omaha Beach.

Perfect Normandy Tour (even the kids will like it)

Normandy D-Day Beaches Omaha, Pointe du Hoc & American Cemetery
Going to Normandy was on my husband's bucket list and we could not have picked a better tour or guide. Doru was extremely knowledgeable and just great to chat with, which comes in handy on the long drive out and back from Paris. We were lucky enough to have just the 4 of our family on the tour, so Doru was able to adjust time and agenda based on our interests and needs. Each site was very moving in its own way. Our 13 year old daughter and our 11 year old son were with us. Our son enjoyed it so much he asked to write the review for Doru's tour. Here are his words:.."The day I had at Normandy was the best day of my life. Doru was helpful and took me on adventures that were amazing! He showed me the grave of Theodore Roosevelt Jr. and the time capsule (at the American Cemetery). Normandy is my favorite place on the face of the earth!"

Guide and tour were exceptional!

Normandy D-Day Beaches Omaha, Pointe du Hoc & American Cemetery
Our guide picked us up early at our hotel and drove us and 2 others to see the beaches of Normandy. He stopped a couple of times along the way for restroom breaks and refreshments. We also stopped in the town where Joan of Arc was killed. There is a beautiful old church and quaint town to see as well. A great bonus! Our guide was very helpful filling in the facts about the different beaches and the cemetery at Omaha and Utah beach. Our trip back to Paris was comfortable. I would highly recommend this guide and tour to anyone wanting to see these sites.

Pointe du Hoc,Omaha Beach, American Cemetery - Day trip from Paris to Normandy
We really enjoyed the day! The tour was a very comprehensive overview of the key sites around Omaha Beach. We saw some really interesting landmarks narrated by a very knowledgeable tour guide, Regis. He even took us off-piste to visit the lesser known areas of Omaha Beach, which demonstrated his level of interest in the subject and enthusiasm in teaching it to others. Very much recommend the tour for anyone wanting a well-rounded visit to Omaha Beach and to better understand the events of summer 1944.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Unlike many other World War II landmarks, Pointe du Hoc has been left largely untouched, and somber remnants of the conflict are still visible today.

  • A monument to Lieutenant Colonel James Earl Rudder, who led the Rangers in the Pointe du Hoc assault, also stands on site.

  • The clifftop memorial is always free to visit.

  • The events of D-Day have been immortalized in numerous Hollywood movies, including “The Longest Day” and “Saving Private Ryan.”
