Great Wall at Jiankou

Huairou District, Beijing

The Basics

Day-trippers, hikers, overnight campers, and photographers come to the Jiankou section to escape the crowds and enjoy the sublime scenery that stretches for nearly 10 miles (14.5 kilometers) along steep, jagged cliffs. At Beijing Knot, three segments of the Great Wall meet; it is from here that many visitors begin guided hikes between the Jiankou and Mutianyu Great Wall—the most popular Great Wall walk, lasting anywhere from three to six hours.

A tour guide can help navigate the trickier areas, including Eagle Flies Facing Upward, the watchtower-topped hill that’s so steep even an eagle would have to fly vertically to reach the top. The stairs leading up to the tower are very steep—so narrow in some areas that only one person can pass at a time.

VIP Hiking Tour from Jiankou Great Wall to Mutianyu Great Wall
Lindsey was a great guide and very patient, allowing me to rest as needed. It was nice being in an area that wasn't overloaded with tourists and gave you a real feeling of the history of the area. Lunch was delicious followed by a relaxing drive back to our hotel. Lindsey even picked flowers as we hiked and gave me the bouquet in honor of Chinese Valentines Day which was the day after our hike. We had a great time. For us, that was the best way to see the Great Wall.

Amazing Christmas Day experience

Private Hike from Beijing: Go Beyond The Jiankou and Mutianyu Great Wall
We booked a driver through Viator to do Jiankou to Mutianyu section of the Great Wall on Christmas Day. Once booked, James contacted almost immediately us to confirm our pick up time and location via email. He messaged us the day before our trip to confirm again and to warn us that the weather might make conditions dangerous due to snow/ice. Zuo our driver picked us up and we drove toward jiankou. Despite us being worried about the language barrier in terms of arranging a pick up point etc, Zuo communicated expertly through phone translation and proved to be very humorous and entertained us greatly on our journey. When we hit icy/snowy roads, he safely navigated tricky parts, before making the decision to alter our drop off point for safety reasons. Although it cut off a little bit of our walk, we were more than happy with the new point and understood how to communicate with him when we reached the other end. We had an amazing walk on the snowy, wild section of the wall, seeing only a handful of people for the first few hours. Incredible views, steep bits to climb up and slip down, a brilliant adventure despite our trainers not being the best footwear for quite deep snow (possibly crampons would have been useful!). When we got Mutianyu however, it was very clear that this was the tourist section which was a very different experience from the wild section. After a couple of texts to Zuo, we climbed down from the wall and got a shuttle bus to where he was waiting for us. The walk took us about 5 hours, but included lots of stops for views, photos, snacks and working out how to scramble up steep bits. He provided us with water when we reached the end and made sure we were comfortable for our 2 hour drive home. Thanks to James for organising and to Zuo for helping make our Christmas Day trip one to remember - we’d love to return. Highly recommended, an amazing experience!!

The Highlight of My Trip to China

Private Wild Great Wall Hiking Day Tour:10km hiking from Jiankou to Mutianyu
I was on a business trip to China and left a couple days early to explore Beijing. I really wanted to see the wild wall, away from the tourists, and am so glad I found this tour. My guide Gerry was outstanding. He met me at my hotel at 7:30am and took care of everything until we returned around 5pm. It was about a 2 hour drive from the city center to the trailhead. Then we had about an hour of a tough trail hike to get to the wall (this was the most strenuous part). The wall was absolutely amazing, towering above a huge valley surrounded by very tall mountains. We spent about 2 hours hiking the wild Jiankou section and saw very few other hikers - it was pretty special to be in such a beautiful place, getting to experience the historic wall first hand and without the crowds. Gerry took me on the Ox Bow section, which was pretty steep, but well worth the view and experience (there is a shortcut to bypass this section for the faint of heart). Once we got to the Mutianyu section, it got pretty crowded, but this was only for about 45 minutes until we got to the cable car to go down. After the hike, Gerry took me to a great restaurant serving local food and it was amazing. This tour was by far the best part of my trip and if I make it back to Beijing, I will definitely do it again. Thanks for an amazing day, Gerry!

Unforgettable Experience

Private Hiking Tour to The Great Wall of China in Beijing
Combining unrestored, quiet "wild wall" of Jiankou with the beautiful restored but much more popular Mutianyu, you really get the best of both words. Our guide Peter appointed by Greatwall Trek Club only further enhanced the experience by being personable and committed to excellent service. He is the only guide in our China travels to come right up to our hostel instead of making us walk to a bigger hotel for pickup. He provided snacks and water, helped take some photos, and generally provided great conversation and recommendations.

Private Hiking Tour to The Great Wall of China in Beijing
This was an excellent hike on the unrestored part of the Great Wall. Our guide, James, arranded promptly at our hotel and provided both of us with a walking stick, water and snack. We only met a couple of other people on the trail in this section. The hike was quite manageable. James stopped many times for photo ops which included lots of information too. He spoke fluent English. James surprised us by presenting us with a certificate for completing the hike. Our names were written in English and Chinese on the certificate. James signed and dated it. After the hike, James took us to a restaurant and ordered us authentic Chinese food. It was delicious and unlike any Chinese food I had ever eaten. I would highly recommend this hike with James as the guide!

The Wall...with Paul

Jiankou Great Wall Hiking
Paul was electric. Very conversant and informative on the long drive to the wall. Scrambling about on the unrestored Wall was beyond cool. Lots of vertical at times, and in some places had to skirt around the wall ruins. Pretty epoch experience. The vistas are breathtaking... i found myself staring north from the wall imaging mongol hordes swarming into the valley. At other times i was gasping for breath after a near vertical 100m scramble. Paul took us for a delicious lunch afterward where he treated us to vibrant conversation stretching from Chinese history to the superiority of Xi Jinping to Donald Trump. My man Paul’s blood runs red and yellow. God bless you, my friend.
