Jeita Grotto

Valley of the Dog River

The Basics

The Jeita Grotto is a sprawling cave complex, divided into upper and lower levels. Guided tours take in all the highlights. Visitors enjoy a boat cruise through the lower grotto, a walking tour of the upper grotto, a cable-car ride, and a scenic train ride between the two grottoes. Most travelers visit on a day tour from Beirut, often in combination with nearby attractions such as UNESCO-listed Byblos or the pilgrimage site of Harissa.

Small Daily Tours to Jeita Grotto and Byblos with Lunch
Again a wonderful tour with Lebanon Tours and Travels to Jeita Grotto and Byblos. We had the best guide ever, Albert. He was also our driver and he arranged a very nice Local guide and a yummy restaurant in Byblos. About Albert, he was excellent, knew a lot and was besides that a very nice warm person. Hope many other tourists can enjoy his company and knowledge.

Sightseeing all-inclusive Private Tour to Jeita Grotto, Harissa and Byblos
Such a lovely trip seeing the Jeita Grotto, Harissa and Byblos. The driver was exceptional and managed to get us there despite the protests. We spent a bit of time in traffic but that’s to be expected under the circumstances when there is political unrest. Very recommended company and driver.

Jeita Grotto,Harissa&Byblos Full-Day PRIVATE-CAR Trip from Beirut
Friday was it an problem to come to Jeita Grotto. We were afraid that we would missed our plane and that we had to go to the airport earlier. Also the time we schould be back was not shure. So we asked the driver to drive back to the hotel. We payed for the trip. And i understood that the revolution is a step in the right way. I love Libanon i love the people. And it is the money worth we payed.

Small Group Tour from Beirut to Jeita Grotto, Harissa and Byblos
This trip was full of memories. You have the opportunity to visit three great areas/sites in 1 day. They all were well worth the time and we’re all interesting and different. The tour group was amazing. Completely comunitive from the beginning with my concerns and requests. I felt very safe on the tour while covid restrictions were in place. He did a terrific job taking me around the sites explaining the history and culture of Lebanon. The tour also includes a wonderful lunch at a local restaurant I would 100% recommend. I’m so thankful for this group that made my stay in Lebanon memorable.

History of the Jeita Grotto

Though evidence suggests the Jeita Grotto was inhabited during ancient times, the caverns were rediscovered in 1863 by an American missionary. The subterranean Nahr el-Kalb river runs through the Lower Grotto, making it accessible via boat at certain times of the year. During the Lebanese Civil War the grottos were closed to the public and used as munitions storage, but in 1995 the Jeita Grotto was reopened to the public.
