Built on the former grounds of Friedrichsfelde Palace, Tierpark was built in 1955 to rival the Berlin Zoo, on the west side of the Berlin Wall. Resident species range from the conventional to rare and endangered, including the Rothschild’s giraffe and the Indian rhinoceros. The animal park participates in attempts to reintroduce species that have become endangered or extinct. It also participates in 120 breeding programs, and has successfully bred 15 baby elephants since 1999.
Things to Know Before You Go
The Berlin Tierpark is a must for animal and nature lovers, and families with children.
Visitors typically spend about three hours exploring the massive zoo, and watching the various shows and animal feedings.
Three restaurants and a gift shop are on the premises.
The zoo is wheelchair accessible and features a number of accessible restrooms throughout the park. Wheelchairs are available for rent.
How to Get There
Tierpark Berlin is located in the Friedrichsfelde district. Take metro line U5 or tram line M17, 27, or 37 to the Tierpark station, situated right in front of the animal park entrance. To enter through the castle entrance, take tram line M17, 27, or 37, or city bus 194, to the Am. Tierpark stop.
When to Get There
Tierpark is open 365 days a year from 9am; closing times vary seasonally. Weekends tend to be the busiest, so visit during the week when there are smaller crowds. The best time to visit Tierpark—and Berlin in general—is during the warmer, drier months, May through September.
Learn at the Tierpark
While of course you can explore the grounds on your own, Tierpark offers an array of guided tours, animal visitations, and tracking courses for both kids and adults. Get up close to your favorite animals, such as penguins, giraffes, and elephants, and learn more about their native habitats. The park also offers scavenger hunts for at least two teams at a time to learn more about their teammates, the zoo, and its animals.
