Dumbo

Brooklyn, New York, 11201

The Basics

Once a nondescript ferry landing and industrial manufacturing area, Dumbo underwent a striking renovation in the latter half of the 20th century. It also changed monikers: Formerly known as Gairville, the neighborhood was redubbed Dumbo—short for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass—in the 1970s. Now home to art galleries, tech companies, and top-notch bars and restaurants, Dumbo has become one of New York City’s most expensive and in-demand areas. Its proximity to the Brooklyn Bridge and Brooklyn Bridge Park also makes it a popular tourist destination.

Dumbo features on dozens of New York itineraries, many of which pair Brooklyn Bridge walks with neighborhood explorations. Other tours focus on the area’s destination-worthy food scene, while biking tours offer a speedy way to sightsee.

What a day!
Angelo was our tour guide. He was so knowledgeable on the area and history. He had several stories to share about people and events that happened in Brooklyn Heights, the Borrklyn and Manhattan Bridges, and DUMBO. He was able to show us locally owned shops and restaurants and we were given ideas of shops to explore after our tour. We traveled with two teens, and both were as fascinated about the tour as the adults. The food along the tour was also outstanding!

Brooklyn Bridge & DUMBO Food Tour
Our tour guide, Angelo, was great. Really nice guy and had lots of interesting information about places we visited. Seems to be genuinely interested and doing lots of research on Brooklyn. Food was great and plentiful. Would have liked to see a few of the places where he got the food instead him getting everything by himself, but it was raining so maybe he wanted to keep us from getting wet. Lots of great pictures. Thanks Angelo!!

Gary was a great guide - enormous knowledge , great attitude. I really appreciate his efforts to engage our 9 and 11 year olds. They went from complaining WHY did we have to do a walking tour to really enjoying it.

Private Brooklyn Walking Tour: Brooklyn Bridge DUMBO and Brooklyn Heights
This tour was a definite highlight of our week in the city! David was a FANTASTIC guide!! He engaged equally well with my wife and me as well as our teenage kids. He has a deep knowledge of the area. He shared history and some celebrity information related to the area. He worked in coffee (and Shake Shack - for the kids) stops along the way. He took care of us from the start and made sure that we knew how to get to our next destination after the tour. My kids fondly referenced David several times in the days following our time with him. We highly recommend this tour!!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • One of Dumbo’s most photographed corridors is Washington Street, which perfectly frames the view of the Brooklyn Bridge between two buildings.

  • The Brooklyn Flea is a popular vintage, craft, and food market, and it’s held in Dumbo’s Manhattan Bridge Archway on Sundays from April to October.

  • Jane’s Carousel, located in Brooklyn Bridge Park, is a beautifully carved merry-go-round that dates to 1922—and it only costs a couple bucks to ride.

When to Get There

Dumbo is appealing throughout the year, but the neighborhood has so many open-air attractions that it’s best to go when the weather is fine. In the summer months, Brooklyn Bridge Park plays host to Movies with a View, a weekly open-air film series that makes the New York skyline its backdrop.

Must-Eat Locations

One of Dumbo’s culinary highlights is Grimaldi’s: a traditional coal-burning brick-oven pizzeria and a Brooklyn icon. After stopping to enjoy a whole pie, you can also drop by Jacques Torres for chocolate, the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory for a sweet treat, and the Brooklyn Roasting Co. for a perfectly pulled espresso.
