The Basics

Chichén Itzá is a UNESCO World Heritage site, made up of many stone buildings in various states of preservation, all connected by a network of roads calledsacbeob. The three most well-known of these monument complexes are El Castillo, the Temple of Warriors, and the Great Ball Court.

The highlight of Chichen Itza's Mayan ruins is the Kukulcan Pyramid, known as El Castillo. Mesoamerican cultures occasionally built larger pyramids on top of smaller ones, and this is the case for the 79-foot (24-meter) step pyramid of El Castillo, where an excavation discovered a temple with an elaborate jaguar throne. History and archaeology buffs would do well to choose a tour that combines a visit to Chichen Itza with the ruins at Ek Balam, Coba, and Valladolid. Alternatively, choose a tour with access to the Mayaland Resort and a buffet lunch.

Freddy, Frank, and Victor we’re just the best tour guides for it all they really got into the history of Chichén Itzá and gave us a really good cultural experience! The guide at Chichén Itzá Rodrigo also was the best! He made it really memorable and exciting to be there. I will definitely recommend amigo tours to anybody!

Chichen Itza, Cenote & Valladolid Private Tour
This was a fantastic tour! We had both a private driver and private tour guide who was able to explain all the details about Chichen Itza! We also were able to make many stops and loved the Cenote they brought us to. This is a great way to view the site during COVID as we had all the transportation an activities to ourselves. Thank you for a wonderful tour I would highly recommend!

Chichen Itza, Cenote Ik Kil and Coba Ruins Premium Service All Fees included
We really enjoyed our experience! Even though it was raining for the first half of the day(we went in the mid June), it did clear up by the time we got to Chichenitza. It is a full day tour, so make sure you grab extra snacks with you. Jesus was a great tour guide, and our driver was driving very carefully and professionally. One in a liftime experience!

Chichen Itza and the Pink pools
Saul was a fantastic guide. He went above and beyond to make sure our experience was comfortable and easy. He took care of dealing with the entrance fees, confirmed the tour with me via WhatsApp, and dropped me off at a more convenient location than my hotel. When I forgot my water bottle in the van, he brought it to my hotel. The group was small (3) and we loved being the first ones in Chichen Itza. Very organized. It was a wonderful day!
A Great Tour!

Chichen Itza Day Trip from Tulum Including Cenote and Lunch
This was a great tour and experience. Very organized, responsive, and knowledgeable tour guides. Chichen Itza was incredible to see and the cenote was awesome (make sure you jump in - it’s so much fun!). Bring some extra cash for lockers at the cenote and for the Mayan handmade items at the lunch spot you stop at.
Excellent tour!

Chichen Itza All-Inclusive, Valladolid, Tequila tasting, Cenote Swim & Buffet
Marco and Mauricio took good care of us during our trip! We learned a lot and Marco was very kind and entertaining! I just wish we had more time in Chichen Itza, but we understand that it’s limited during COVID. We had a wonderful time overall and we highly recommend this tour! Thank you very much!

Chichen Itza, Izamal & swim in Cenote, with meals
I enjoyed the tour I took. I did not do the tour listed though as company changed the tour with my permission. Vicente was a great guide for Chichen Itza. He and Frank? were wonderful all day. The restorante mayab was amazing, food was deliand staff was great. My favorite part, though was the swim at the cenote. Beautiful and refreshing after long hot day in sun.
Wonderful experience

Chichen Itza, Cenote Ik Kil and Coba Ruins Premium Service All Fees included
Wonderful tour and Martin our guide was well informed educating us all in the Mayan history and culture. My only advise would be to go to Chichen Itza first as it is a very long day and very hot. Would have been nice to visit in the am when cooler.

Chichen Itza Combo Tour with Cenote Swim and Lunch from Cancun
The tour was wonderful from start to finish. All of the staff were friendly and attentive. We toured the archeological site with Juan Carlo. He was fantastic. I learned so much history of the Mayan people and the amazingly complex and accurate construction of the Chichen Itza buildings. I would definitely recommend a tour with Juan Carlo.
Highly recommended cultural tour

Chichen Itza All-Inclusive, Valladolid, Tequila tasting, Cenote Swim & Buffet
Wonderful tour included a stop in a colonial town, Chichen Itza, lunch buffet and cenote. We went during the Covid-19 pandemic and Amigo tours certainly kept it safe (mandatory masks, hand sanitizer provided, etc). Special shout out to our guide Antonio and bus driver Jesus for making our trip memorable and safe!

Chichen Itza, Cenote & Valladolid Tour
The service provided was amazing! Alan did his best to make us laugh & gave a great overview of the history of the Mayan's. The A/C bus was comfy & there was even a pit stop planned on the way to Chichen Itza. I booked the night before & was apprehensive as a solo traveler, but the experience was great!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Many tours are led by archaeologist tour guides, who are well-versed in Mayan culture.

  • The Ossario group and Central group are open to everyone; Chichen Viejo (Old Chichen) is only open to archaeologists.

  • Come prepared for the heat with light clothing, sunscreen, bottled water, and a hat.

  • This popular site can get extremely crowded—book an early-access tour to beat the crowds.

How To Get There

Chichen Itza is roughly two hours from Cancun, Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum, Quintana Roo by car. Visitors to those coastal resorts will have plenty of options for day trips to the archaeological site. Departures are also available from Cozumel and Merida.

When to Get There

The best time to get to Chichen Itzais at opening time, before the crowds arrive and the sun is high in the sky. Some private tours and small-group tours offer early access to the ancient ruins. At sunrise and sunset on the spring and fall equinoxes, the corner of the pyramid casts a shadow of Kukulkan, a feathered serpent god, creating the illusion of a snake slithering down the north side with the sun's movement.

Nearby Cenotes

The Cenote Sagrado is also an impressive natural site at Chichen Itza, featuring a sinkhole gateway into an underground body of water 197 feet (60 meters) in diameter. Another nearby cenote is Ik Kil, and some Chichen Itza day trips combine visits to these freshwater sinkholes on the Yucatan Peninsula with a stop at the ruins.
