There is no admission fee to the Colored Canyon. As it’s hard to find and driving is uncommon in the Sinai, almost all visitors see the canyon as part of an organized tour or with a private guide. Colored Canyon tours typically include other desert attractions, such as a snorkeling trip to the famous Dahab Blue Hole, a camel ride, a 4WD safari, or a trip to a Bedouin village. Tours leaving from Sharm el Sheikh typically also include lunch and/or a shopping stop in the seaside town of Dahab.
Things to Know Before You Go
The Colored Canyon is a must-do for photographers and nature lovers.
Wear comfortable shoes for hiking the canyon—closed shoes are a must in summer, when the desert sand can become extremely hot.
The Colored Canyon is not wheelchair accessible.
How to Get There
The Colored Canyon is in the Sinai Desert north of Nuweiba, about a 2-hour drive from Sharm el Sheikh. There is no public transport so most travelers visit with a private driver or on an organized tour that includes door-to-door round-trip transfers. It’s worth booking a tour that includes other desert attractions.
When to Get There
The Sinai Desert can get extremely hot over the summer months (roughly May to September), and during those times it’s wise to visit the Colored Canyon early in the morning to beat the heat. Photographers should aim for the golden hour, shortly before sunset, when the colors are at their richest, at any time of year.
The Geology of the Colored Canyon
Also known as “wadi,” the narrow, winding, heavily eroded canyons are one of the most striking features of the Sinai Desert. Besides the Colored Canyon, the White Canyon is another popular visitor destination. The Colored Canyon gets its brilliant hues from sandstone formed when the area was at the bottom of the Red Sea many millions of years ago.
