Orlando's Column (Orlandov Stup)
The basics
Stone carvings adorn the four sides of Orlando’s Column, a landmark set in Dubrovnik’s political and cultural center. Where political meetings and public executions were once held, the column now stands as a symbol for freedom with the white flag of the Republic flying above it on public occasions. Several tours including Dubrovnik walking tours and multi-day tours along the coastline in Croatia include a stop at Orlando’s Column. Learn about the history of this landmark and the surrounding architecture during a visit.
Things to know before you go
- Orlando’s Column is a must-see attraction for travelers interested in history and families seeking educational opportunities.

How to get there
Surrounded by some of Dubrovnik’s most impressive architecture in Luza Square, including St. Blaise Church and Sponza Palace, Orlando’s Column is in the heart of the Old Town. It is best reached on foot in this pedestrianized section of the city.
Trip ideas
When to get there
Luza Square is a popular city landmark; plan a visit early in the morning or after sunset to see Orlando’s Column in a peaceful environment. The summer season is the most popular time of year to visit, especially during the Dubrovnik Summer Festival in July, but the shoulder season months in spring and fall are equally attractive with cooler temperatures.
Local Folklore
Mastercraftsman Antun Dubrovcanin created the stone carvings on Orlando’s Column, but he couldn’t have known that the length of Orlando’s arm would become a common measurement in the city. Don’t be surprised if you hear locals referring to Orlando’s arm as a point of comparison.
