Castle Hill, Edinburgh, EH1 2NG

The Basics

Explore Edinburgh Castle on a time-saving skip-the-line walking tour or delve into the history of this iconic fortress on a private tour. See the room where the macabre 15th-century Black Dinner took place; admire the Stone of Destiny; take a photo with the massive Mons Meg cannon; visit the room where Queen Mary gave birth to King James IV; and find mysterious graffiti left behind by prisoners of war.

Many Edinburgh city tours also include a visit to the castle, whether you want to explore by private mini-bus, vintage taxicab, or on a hop-on hop-off bus tour.

Historic Edinburgh
I really enjoyed learning about the history of Edinburgh. Once Charles pointed out the winds and closes they were easy to spot and were fun to explore. We chose the tour option to see the castle, and enjoyed seeing how the the castle was set up.

Small Group Royal Mile Walking Tour with Optional Entry to Edinburgh Castle
Really informative guide took us around bits of the Royal Mile and pointed out obscure parts of the town. He had to leave us at the entrance of the castle due to Covid rules which is a shame. Enjoyable experience though!

Guided Edinburgh Private Walking Tour
Stewart, our guide was charming & had a great knowledge of the history of Edinburgh. Due to Covid rules he wasn’t allowed to accompany us into the castle so we didn’t have him for a large proportion of the morning which was a shame.

Edinburgh Full-Day Guided Private Tour in a Premium Minivan
You will be able to see the highlights of Edinburgh in a day and it’s excellent way of travelling especially now because of COVID-19. Our tour guide and chauffeur for the day was Alexandra and we had very relaxing day. He was very knowledgable and had good sense of humour.

Guided Edinburgh Private Walking Tour
We had a wonderful tour with Mr. Usher! He was so informative. We saw so much of the city and learned so much. He went above and beyond when he saw I had a list of places to see. He actually took us by car to see the last few things on my list...pretty special! I’d highly recommend this walking tour. Loved every minute!!!

How to Get There

Edinburgh Castle is located atop a hill in the Old Town. Parking is difficult in this part of Edinburgh, so the easiest way to get there is on foot from the Royal Mile, by public transport, or on a guided tour. The city’s primary train and bus terminal (Edinburgh Waverley) is within walking distance of the castle.

When to Get There

The castle is open year-round and is busiest in summer. Arrive early to avoid crowds and plan to visit the Crown Jewels first, as lines form quickly and can take over an hour to get through. Afternoon visitors can enjoy the daily firing of the “one-o’clock gun,” while August travelers can sometimes see the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo performing just outside the castle walls.

Best Photo Spots in Edinburgh Castle

The castle’s sweeping Old Town city views are no coincidence—its hilltop position was carefully chosen to protect the city. For great views and equally great photographs, head to the windows near the row of cannons along Half Moon Battery, the grated overlooks across from the military prison, or St. Margaret’s Chapel, the oldest surviving part of the castle.
