Knosos

The Basics

The Palace of Knossos is one of the most popular attractions in Crete, but its immense size, little signage, and complex history means it’s worth visiting with a local guide. The best way to explore is on a guided walking tour, taking in highlights of the Minoan palace such as the Central Court, the Throne Room, the Tripartite Shrine, the Grand Staircase, and the Queen’s Hall.

  • Choose between a standard entrance ticket or a combined ticket that includes access to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.

  • Plan to spend around two hours at the archaeological site, excluding wait times.

  • Ticket lines can be long in peak season—arrive early or book a skip-the-line tour to maximize your time.

  • Knossos Palace provides little shade, so you should bring sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water if visiting in the summer months.

  • Wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking over uneven ground.

  • Many parts of the archaeological site are wheelchair accessible; entrance is free for visitors with disabilities.

Easy way to see a popular attraction
Easy way to see a popular attraction. Audio tour was difficult to download, but informative. Would definitely recommend. Also, you do not have to go exactly at the time listed on your ticket. My ticket said 0900, got there at 0815, and they let us in no problem!

Perfect day trip to Knossos, Archaeology Museum, plus Lake Kournas

SeaByBus - All inclusive full day trip to Knossos-Arch.Museum-Heraklion city
Well worth it! We ended up on a ‘private tour’ due to C19 cancellations. Christine and Thanasis were welcoming, relaxed, informative and flexible. The mini bus was well equipped, modern and comfortable, including wifi and Covid necessities. The ‘snack’ was very filling and there were plentiful drinks including alcohol. Christine and Thanasis were lovely! What more can I say? Highly recommended. Made an unscheduled stop at Lake Kournas, because we wanted to see it.

Combined Guided Tour to Lasithi Plateau & Knossos Palace
I liked the vatiety of the stops. It was is good mix and I learned a lot about the Greek history. I wished we had more time at the palace and more information about the history. For me could have cancelled the stop at the Taverne. Food was good, was feeling to be forced to eat there, because it was the only thing there, didn’t suit me.

Knossos Palace: Self-Guided Audio Tour on your Phone (without ticket)
Great content, but audio guides should be available the instant you book. Had to book for a future date and then call the company for the access code. Since everything is digital, you should be able to book and get instantly like everything else. Content was really interesting aside from not knowing exactly where to go on site - more general info with some surprising facts about how advanced they were 4000+ years ago!

Knossos Museum and Heraklion tour from Rethymno
The tour was excellent. Visiting the palace and the museum on the same day with a guide was one of the best museum experiences I've ever had because of all the contextualization. Our guide was great. Just lacks earphones.

Knossos Palace Skip-the-Line Ticket (Shared Tour - Small group)
Joanna provided us a very interesting tour that helped us understand not only what we saw at Knossos but also how the Minoans emerged and interacted with the Assyrians, Egyptians and others. Also a bit about Bronze vs. Iron ages, how different cultures perceive color, and more. Plus our ticket included a visit to the archaeological museum in Iraklion.

Knossos Palace Skip-the-Line Ticket (Shared Tour - Small group)
Myself and husband booked this tour online the previous evening, easy and straightforward. We had our guide Yiannis all to ourselves which was a bonus, she spoke perfect english and was really interesting, informative and had a good sense of humour.. She encouraged questions and tailored the tour to us,in all she spent two hours with us, half an hour longer than booked for. Excellent trip :-)

Joanne was so informative and engaging! Highest points! She told us so much from the viewpoint of a true Cretan instead of the popular Victorian view

Greek Mythology at Knossos Palace

Historic facts and Greek mythology intertwine at Knossos. While King Minos was believed to have been a real figure, the notorious Minotaur—the half-man, half-bull imprisoned in the palace’s labyrinth—and his creators, Daidalos and Ikaros, are characters of Greek legend.
