The charming port town of Hoi An is a favorite stop for many visitors to Vietnam. While most travelers stay in town, there are a few opportunities for excursions outside the city. If you’re ready to explore farther afield, here are some of the best day trips from Hoi An.
Tra Que — 2 miles (3 km) away
Situated on the outskirts of Hoi An, the village of Tra Que provides much of Hoi An’s fresh produce, earning it the nickname Vegetable Village. A guided bike tour here offers insight into the day-to-day life of rural Vietnamese farmers, as well as the opportunity to cook some local dishes, like spring rolls and Vietnamese savory pancakes, during a cooking class with the fresh produce Tra Que is known for.
Cham Island — 12 miles (20 km) away
After you’ve seen the ancient Cham ruins of My Son, spend a day on Cham Island, home to an ethnically Cham population. While the villages are interesting, the main draw on Cham Island is the diving and snorkeling off the coast of the area’s remote islands. Visibility tends to be at its best from late June through the end of August.
Marble Mountain — 12 miles (19 km) away
Vietnam’s picturesque Marble Mountain, lying along the eastern coastline near Da Nang, is a convenient half-day tour from Hoi An—and is perfect for those in need of some fresh air and some time communing with Mother Nature. Stone stairs carved into the mountain lead up to a Buddhist pagoda standing guard over a series of caves. Tours to the mountain often include a stop at one of the local villages specializing in ornate marble sculptures.
My Son — 23 miles (37 km) away
The Hindu people known as the Cham occupied the coast on what is now Vietnam from the fourth to the 14th centuries. The crumbling remains of their empire, set within an elevated basin of central Vietnam known as My Son, are one of their most important architectural legacies. While it’s possible to tour the complex on your own, you’ll have a more rewarding experience of this UNESCO World Heritage Site if you go on a tour with a guide who can offer historical and cultural perspective.
