Killarney National Park Cork Road, Killarney

The Basics

Covering around 25,000 acres (10,000 hectares), Killarney National Park is truly vast. Organized day tours can help ensure you get to see all the best parts of Ireland’s first national park. Choose between short 1- or 2-hour tours by jaunting car (a two-wheeled horse and carriage), guided walks, or boat cruises and kayak tours on the lakes of Killarney. Day tours depart from Killarney and Limerick, and include stops at key park attractions such as the Gap of Dunloe, Muckross House, Ross Castle, and the Ladies View scenic lookout. Some full-day tours combine Killarney National Park with the Ring of Kerry, Dingle Peninsula, and Mizen Head. Multi-day tours depart from Dublin and incorporate sights in Cork, Kerry, and—during longer tours—the west coast of Ireland.

Enjoyed every minute of the jaunting carriage ride. I would definitely do another trip. Carraige had hand sanitizers and was clean.

Story time with Patty through the park

Killarney National Park Tour
The tour was really lovely. He took many photos of us along the way while telling us about the stories and history of the places we stopped. I would HIGHLY recommend this tour if you are in Killarney. Rain or shine, the carriage was prepared, even offering us blankets to keep warm. And Patty was just the goodest pony ever. Would absolutely do it again! Way better than walking the national park.

Guided Killarney National Park Walking Tour
Richard our guide is a local born and bred in the area who had an amazing depth of knowledge about the woodland and the lakes including boyhood memories of his popular swimming holes. He also has a broad grasp of the historical facts in relation to the formation of the National Park and was very willing to impart advise on the area. As an added boys he is a fluent Irish speaker which is a great help in explaining the background to local places

Guided Killarney National Park Walking Tour
Richard was a great guide and seemed to know everyone in the area. We went through some great trails and identified local plants and saw so many deer. I had a lovely time. It was such a laid back, informative tour and Killarney is so beautiful I wish I could go back.

Killarney National Park is a great place to visit. It is a wide and big park with beautiful places to see. The jaunting ride was a first time experience and we had a great time on it as our guide/driver was very friendly and accommodating.

Killarney National Park Horseback Ride. Co Kerry. Guided. 2 hours.
Amazing tour with Tamara! The stables are fantastic, and they tailored our speed & horses to our skill level which made for a much more enjoyable time. The route is lovely going through the national park, with deer spotting along the way. Helmets & boots were provided, and the horses were saddled for us upon arrival. The staff/team was super nice and helpful. Highly recommend heading here for any skill level!

Great ride, but no service

Killarney National Park Horseback Ride. Co Kerry. Guided. 2 hours.
Absolutely amazing horseback ride around the national park. We came across Deer, Reindeer, Kerry Cows & incredible natural beauty. What suffers though is the lack of customer service from the staff. We arrived & were just told to grab a helmet, then next thing we know we're getting on a horse & off we go. There was no briefing, no instructions & then worst of all when we came back we were off our horse within seconds & that was that. No opportunity for a quick photo, no goodbye, no thank you. It just a weird feeling as the ride was amazing but the service was lacking. All in all I'd still recommend it of course, just be prepared to not get much instruction.

How to Get There

From Killarney town center, it is just a 10-minute walk or 5-minute drive to the entrance at the north of the park. Sights such as Torc Waterfall and Muckross House are farther from town (about 4.5 miles/7 kilometers), so it’s best to drive or go as part of an organized tour that offers transportation.

When to Get There

Summer is the busiest season at the park, yet it is also the mildest and, therefore, best for outdoor activities. Early morning and late afternoon offer quieter visits, while fall and spring bring more opportunities for solitude. Winter can be cold—but starkly beautiful.

Muckross House

Among the park’s biggest attractions is Muckross House, a 19th-century estate sitting upon the shore of the lake with which it shares its name. Queen Victoria stayed here during a visit to the national park in 1861. Today visitors can explore the impressive mansion’s interior, which is packed with period furnishings, as well as the manicured gardens and on-site farm dwellings that paint a picture of farming life in 1930s and 1940s Ireland.
