The Basics

Visitors can explore the Palomino Islands on a day trip from Lima on board a comfortable cruise boat or a sailboat. The islands are particularly known for the thousands of sea lions that gather here to swim and sun themselves on the rocks. If the water is calm enough, and you’re feeling brave, you can swim near the sea lions. You’ll also find colonies of Humboldt penguins and an impressive number of other birds.

THE island to visit when in Lima
Spectacular! This is definitely the top activity to do in Lima. We did both Palomino islands and Ballestas islands and this adventure was by far a much better experience.

The trip was great. We saw wonderful things on a short but well-spent time. Julio, our guide, was absolutely lovely, and helped me so much with my sea-illness (which by the way was ok, I was the only one who got it on the really good-quality boat)

This was the most memorable experience and our host Julio was a wonderful guide to make sure we all were taken care of and filmed us in the water to share with us. I would do this again in a heartbeat. A dream come true finally happened

Amazing! Thousands of sea lions! Swam WITH them, not near them! Long boat ride, but worth it. Friendly staff and friendly sea lions.

Do Palamino, rather than Ballesta Islands

It is a nice tour. Although there are many sea lions, mostly they don't touch you. Water is deep and choppy and safety vests were not the best.

Great trip. The crew was very professional and friendly always keeping safety first. We seen a lot of nice scenery but the real kicker was the Sea Lions...Awesome. Getting to swim with them was a thrill and so memorable. Also, nice to see other wildlife such as the penguins and other sea birds.

Cruise was as described -we got to swim with the sea lions and saw penguins and pelicans as well!. The crew was very helpful and took pictures that turned out great. Boat was clean and felt very safe. I appreciated the offered Dramamine at the start, the generous snacks and soda on the trip back. Also learned a little about the recent history of Peru as one of the islands we passed was used as a prison. I would recommend this trip as a must for a visitor to Lima.

A Remarkable experience

The tour was great fun! There was initial disappointment because an email from the company advised us that, due to mechanical failures on the yacht, we would be traveling by speedboat instead. I don’t know what the yacht experience would have been like so I’m only guessing that it was probably more spacious and perhaps offered a few more conveniences. Our group, however, was just great. The other travelers were fun and we had a great time visiting the islands. Of course, swimming with the sea lions was a highlight. I’m so glad I did not miss out on this experience. Our tour guide, Rodrigo, did a great job and made sure we were always informed and comfortable.

This is my second time swimming with the sea lions because I wanted to capture the experience with a waterproof camera. The crew was fantastic. The captain maneuvered the boat so everyone had a chance to get a good view of the wildlife. The crew was efficient and friendly.

Well-organized and informative, as well as fun and adventurous! We had a great time interacting with the sea lions in their natural habitat. Our guides did a great job of making sure we kept a safe distance, but also helped to get close if we wanted one to touch our feet. The wetsuits were a must in February, the water was not so bad with it on but still pretty cold and I can’t imagine it would be enjoyable without one.

The tour was very nice! Your guide gives you a short coverage of the most important Information about the island and animals. Youll get water and on your way back some snacks. They provide life vests and wetsuits for everyone. It was amazing because the guide tried to get us closer to the sea lions and we had anlot of fun. Really recommend the tour!

How to Get There

Boat tours to the Palomino Islands depart from the port of Callao, where there is a cruise dock and an airport. If traveling from Lima, take a taxi to Callao; the ride from the center of the city can take anywhere from 30–60 minutes depending on traffic, which is especially heavy in the late afternoon and evening hours. The ride to the islands takes 30–60 minutes, depending on weather and ocean conditions.

When to Get There

While tours run all year round, the most comfortable time to visit the islands is the summer (December–April), when the air and water temperatures are warmest. That said, the best time to visit Lima is the winter (May–September), when there is the least amount of rain. The summer months are warmer but wetter and can be quite foggy.

The City of Callao

The seafront city of Callao has been Peru’s most important port since the colonial era. Today, it is the closest cruise port to Lima (and the launch point for tours of the Palomino Islands). Visitors can tour the 18th-century Real Felipe Fortress, enjoy the beach at La Punta, and learn about the area’s maritime history at the the Naval Museum and the Abtao Submarine Museum, which is housed in a retired submarine.
