The basics

There is no charge to visit the Colossi of Memnon to capture pictures, and most Luxor tour will make a stop here. A typical Luxor West Bank tour will pair the Colossi of Memnon with the Valley of the Kings and the Temple of Hatshepsut, although there are many other fascinating sights across the river.

Some tours cover the West Bank and East Bank in one day, packing in Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, and perhaps even a shopping stop, but it’s worth allowing yourself a day for the West Bank and a day for the East, if time permits.

Luxor Private Tour : West Bank - Valley of Kings, Hatshepsut, Colossi of Memnon
Our visit to the Luxor West Bank sites (including the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's Palace, the Colossi of Memnon) was well conducted by Hanni, whose English was good enough to convey stories and the meaning behind the tombs, palace and monuments we visited. Thank you to our guide Hanni and to Viator for making the booking and scheduling process seamless.

Private Half Day West Bank Tour to Valley of the Kings Queen Hatshepsut Temple and Colossi of Memnon
Our tour was great. We saw the Valley of Kings, temple of Hatshepsut, the Colossi of Memnon, and a few more fun stops. Our guide Hani was great in explaining everything to us, and his English was also great. The agency was very profissional with the booking, even though we booked just a few hours before the tour itself. Overall a great experience!

Private Half Day West Bank Tour to Valley of the Kings Queen Hatshepsut Temple and Colossi of Memnon
Pick up at hotel with nice clean car, guide (Sam) is very knowledgeable. Even when I asked questions not directly about the content of the tour he was able to explain. I would recommend anyone to go with a guide to the valley of the kings, if you don't you risk missing the meaning and context surrounding the tombs. Or missing the most impressive tombs altogether!

Luxor Private Tour : West Bank - Valley of Kings, Hatshepsut, Colossi of Memnon
The guide was kind and attentive. He was clear about the inclusions and exclusions of the tour. We went to a factory of alabaster stone which I found to be quite expensive, so be aware of that.

West Bank in a nutshell - good choice!

Luxor West bank Tour Valley of The Kings, Hatshepsut Temple & Colossi of Memnon
I went on this trip with driver Islam and guide Hator, and they were both very professional. This trip was perfect, because due to the heat a long tour would be too exhausting, and this half-day experience let me see the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon without getting too much tired. You must be aware of the fact that there is a compulsory stop at a local community shop where you will probably be talked into buying something by a very skillful guy, but to be honest I'm happy with the alabaster figurines I bought there, even though I probably overpaid (there will be bargaining down from an insane initial price). But I believe the quality is good, so this might be a good place for your souvenir shopping. All in all, I can recommend this trip, it's well-paced, not overwhelming, gives you a good and solid taste of the West Bank of Luxor 😊

Private Half Day West Bank Tour to Valley of the Kings Queen Hatshepsut Temple and Colossi of Memnon
Our tour guide Yola was fantastic and my fiancee and I enjoyed traveling through Queen Hatsheput's Temple and the Valley of the Kings. Tour struck the perfect balance between hands on and off - we explored the tombs ourselves (gorgeous) and were able to ask questions to our guide afterwards. Yola is friendly, knowledgeable, and even arranged some extra surprises for us. Would defintely book again.

Luxor Private Tour : West Bank - Valley of Kings, Hatshepsut, Colossi of Memnon
The tour was perfectly tailored to our needs. We were a group of granny, parents and grandkids, speaking English & Arabic and with various walking speed! but our kind guide Roushdi had managed to explain & answer all our questions in both languages. We been to the valley of the kings and the impressive Hatshepsut temple. The van was modern & clean. The driver is very polite. Thank you so much & best wishes.

When to get there

The Colossi of Memnon are busy throughout the day. If not, prioritize sites such as the Valley of the Kings and end your day at the statues instead.

Why Are the Statues Called the Colossi of Memnon?

While the statues commemorate Amenhotep III, who ruled Egypt around 1400 BC, they’re overwhelmingly known by their Roman name, the Colossi of Memnon. Around 1,000 years after Amenhotep died, ancient Greeks (and, later, Romans) decided that the statues commemorated an African warrior called Memnon, who was killed during the Trojan War. Colossi is the plural of colossus, which means “giant statue.”
