Naples Underground (Napoli Sotterranea)

Piazza San Gaetano, 68 , Naples, Campania, 80132

The Basics

Descend more than 130 feet (40 meters) below the lively streets of Naples to explore the city’s history, from the aqueducts dug by the ancient Greeks who lived in this area 2,400 years ago and later used by the Romans to the caverns excavated from the soft tufo stone and used as air raid shelters during World War II. A Naples Underground tour also includes visits to a fourth-century water cistern and the ruins of a Roman theater where Emperor Nero once performed.

Naples Underground is open to the public only as part of a guided tour, so booking in advance is imperative, especially during the busy summer months. You can also visit this underground city on a general Neapolitan walking tour or in combination with the nearby archaeological ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum with an expert tour guide.

Our guide was super, but some in the group did not pay attention, and the result was that we took the very narrow tunnel two times😆an exciting experience indeed!

This was an excellent tour and very refreshing because it’s much cooler down in the tunnels than every where else.

This was not a tour on our list. It was recommended to us by a local. We're so glad we took his advice! It was a wonderful experience and very cool to learn about the history of underground Naples! A bonus was that it was UNDERGROUND (nice to be out of the blazing sun for a couple of hours). Tour guide was great! Would have been helpful to have headphones, as it was hard to hear at some points.

Great Tour and History of Naples’ Underground
Dani_L, Jun 2022
Naples Underground Entrance Ticket
This tour was so informative and interesting. Our guide was amazing and showed and explained everything that went on in these tunnels and rooms under Naples from when they were built to when they were used during WWII as air raid shelters. The tour guide was humorous, but also knew so much about Naples Underground. Would definitely recommend this tour to others visiting Naples.

The tour guide was drenched in enthusiasm and information; I even recommend this for people who aren't interested in the subterranean life of Naples-the tour guide opens up your excitement.

Sliding through history

We really enjoyed the tour and walking through the old underground aqueducts. The day we went, there were 2 or 3 cruise ships in Naples, and it appeared that the underground tour had more than an expected number of tours going through the underground passages. We found it interesting that tour guides appeared to be regularly giving each other dirty looks. Multiple tour guides speaking at once in echoey underground cisterns make it challenging to hear what your tour guide is saying. Our favorite part was walking sideways through the narrowest passages.

What a journey through Naples underground! This will really transform your visit. And such a bargain. The tour guide from Milan deserves a raise.
