Welcome to Washington Heights! On this walking tour, we'll follow American history from the Revolutionary War, to the Gilded Age, to rapid urbanization with the arrival of the A and 1 trains, European immigration, and finally the development of the largest Dominican community outside of the Dominican Republic. Our group will visit beautiful Ft. Tryon Park, home to some of New York City's finest gardens and views. We will learn about the Battle of Fort Washington, the grand former estates of the park, and of John D. Rockefeller's vision to create a public park for the people of New York City. Next we will walk through the Hudson Heights section of Washington Heights, exploring beautiful Art Deco residential architecture while learning about the waves of immigration that make Washington Heights so special. The walking route is mostly flat and about 1 mile with bathroom opportunities towards the beginning and end. Guests will be left with suggestions for Dominican food.
