The Basics

To get a handle on Oxford’s colorful history, it’s well worth discovering Oxford University with a guide, whether on an Oxford walking tour, an Oxford cycling tour, or aHarry Potter tour. Most find the city merits a full day, but time-pressed travelers may prefer to bundle Oxford into a combo tour. Some popular Oxford University tour packages include Oxford, the Cotswolds, and Stratford-upon-Avon; Oxford, Windsor Castle, and Stonehenge; and, of course, Oxford and Cambridge.

Rather than having a single unified campus, the University of Oxford is made up of a wealth of different colleges and buildings scattered around the city. While many individual entities, such as Christ Church College and the Bodleian Library, charge for admission, there’s no charge for exploring the city or to look at the architecture. Many travelers choose to experience the university simply by wandering around downtown Oxford.

Downton Abbey and Oxford Tour from London Including Highclere Castle
Carol our tour guide on the bus was fantastic and knowledgeable! Clean shuttle bus and easy ride. The tour at Highclere Castle was missing a tour guide and history. We had to ask questions of the attendants vs them informing us of the story of the house. The gardens were stunning and there's a cafe to have tea and scones!

Windsor Castle, Stonehenge, and Oxford Day Trip from London
The trip was very well organised. Our guide Simon was very friendly, very knowledgeable and managed the whole trip very professionally. John the bus driver was a very competent driver and we felt safe with him at the wheel. Thank you for a very enjoyable day. The tour made it easy for us to see sights without the added stress of getting ourselves there. The coach was very clean and comfortable.

Windsor Castle, Stonehenge, and Oxford Day Trip from London
Leslie, our tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly. The bus was clean and comfortable and the tourist attractions very interesting. It would have been nice to spend more time at Windsor Castle, but with the time/travel constrains I’m not sure that is possible. Evans Tours were helpful and easy to communicate with.

Oxford Bike Tour with Student Guide
I would definitely recommend this tour. It is a great way to see Oxford, we covered a lot of ground in 2 hours. Our guide was very friendly and very knowledgeable about the town and university. He had some great stories and kept us all very entertained while also giving us a good appreciation for what it would be like to study at Oxford. A great tour for adult and children - do it!

Small Group Cotswolds Villages, Stratford and Oxford Day Tour from London
Excellent tour for nice photos of the English country side. Enough time to go on your own if you didn't follow the walking tours. Prepare for a long journey though and the guide talks very much and load (it is funny though). We weren't home until 9:15 PM. If you have long legs, sit at the front.

Windsor Castle, Stonehenge, and Oxford Day Trip from London
Great tour, amazing sights and overall a very good experience with Manon as our wonderful tour guide, glad we could squeeze all the 3 places in just a matter of hours and learn so much from her! The only negative point is that it was too difficult to find the place of departure, the booking didn’t provide enough information on how to find the tour company

Oxford University Walking Tour With University Alumni Guide
Really great tour and Lizzie did a very good job! We had one day out from London to see Oxford and we saw so much more than we would have if we just wandered around the city. Please note that we found it very much worth the money to pay for this tour which is limited to 14 rather than get a "free tour" that was 100-150 people. We could interact with the guide, ask questions and had a great experience.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The University of Oxford is a must for history buffs, architecture lovers, and photographers.

  • Students are usually in the city for just three 8-week terms, or less than half the year.

  • Wear comfortable shoes, as you’ll be on your feet a lot.

  • Avoid peering through windows, wandering into stairwells, etc. The colleges are institutions where students and their teachers live and work.

  • Oxford is a flat city, and the University of Oxford has reasonably good disabled access, but check provisions at each individual college or institution when planning your visit.

How to Get There

The University of Oxford is scattered around Oxford, with its epicenter at the heart of the city. Drivers will likely need to leave their vehicle in a park-and-ride outside the city, so it’s generally easiest to arrive by bus or train. Most London trains start from Paddington, while the popular Oxford Tube coach service stops at Shepherd’s Bush, Notting Hill Gate, Marble Arch, and Victoria.

When to Get There

Access to colleges, libraries, theaters, and the like is typically easiest outside of the University of Oxford’s three terms, which run from early October to early December, mid-January to early March, and late April to mid-June. While it’s nice to see the gardens and meadows in bloom, try to avoid visiting Oxford during the European tourist peak of late June, July, and August. September can be a good time to visit.
