Wat Phnom

Sangkat Wat Phnom, Phnom Penh, Cambodia

The Basics

Wat Phnom is almost always included on the itinerary of half- or full-day Phnom Penh tours, along with stops at the harrowing Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and Killing Fields of Choeung Ek, and the Royal Palace. If you prefer to customize your own sightseeing itinerary, visit Wat Phnom as part of a hop-on hop-off bus tour; you’ll have the freedom to disembark whenever an attraction captures your attention and travel around in air-conditioned comfort.

Excellent personalised informational tour
We had an excellent experience, both our tour guide and our driver were extremely helpful and friendly. Our tour guide provided us with a very personal tour, carefully explaining the importance of the sites we were attending and the history we were witnessing. When the Royal Palace was unavailable due to COVID, he arranged for a sunset tour down the Tonle Sap and Mekong rivers, which was a wonderful end to our day. I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a personalised experience.

Phnom Penh Vital Discovery-Full Day Tour (Including all services)
The tour was comprehensive and interesting. The Royal Palace and grounds were beautiful. Our visit to Wat Phnom Temple, interesting. Visiting the Killing Fields and Genocide Museum was painful but necessary stops if one wants to fully understand the history of Cambodia. My guide was very knowledgeable and his English was very good. Lunch was also plentiful and delicious.

Absolutely perfect tour. My tour guide Kosorl was lovely and very knowledgeable. The Palace, Silver Pagoda and Wat Phnom were beautiful. The Genocide Musuem were so sad to see, but also show the resilience of the beautiful Cambodian people.

Private Tour: Phnom Penh City Tour Full Day
An enjoyable and interesting day. Seeing the Killing Fields and the Prison was an experience we will never forget and made us appreciate how terrifying that period of Cambodia's history must have been. Our guide was very pleasant and knowledgeable. I would happily recommend this tour.

Phnom Penh Full Days Private Tours
This is a very well rounded tour seeing some of the most beautiful and important parts of Phnom Penh. This is a full on day but great if you are only staying in the city for a few days and want to see it all! Teevey our guide was amazing, particularly at the genocide museum & killing fields. She gave us fair warning of what we were going to see and allowed us to spend as much or as little time as we wanted in each place. She was very friendly and everything was explained clearly, and we had fun! It would be nice for lunch to be included. However it was nice that we ate together at a traditional Khmer & Vietnamese restaurant & great chance to learn more about the culture from a local! Thank you 🙏

How to Get There

Wat Phnom’s close proximity to the US Embassy, the French Colonial post office, and Raffles Hotel on Michael Howe Street makes it an ideal starting point for a tour of the city. The easiest way to reach the temple is by taxi or tuk-tuk, or as part of a guided tour.

When to Get There

The temple’s elevated position above the sprawling city makes it a great place to watch the sunset. However, bear in mind that sundown is the busiest time of day. If you want to beat the crowds, head to the temple in the early morning.

The Legend of Wat Phnom

Local legend says that in 1373, following a flash flood, a wealthy widow named Daun Chi Penh found four bronze Buddha statues inside of a floating tree on the Tonle Sap River. She rallied the nearby residents and had them create an 88-foot (27-meter) mound, and then erected a shrine on top to hold the Buddhas. The hill is said to be the origin of modern Phnom Penh, which translates as Penh's Hill.
