The Basics

Sightseeing and hop-on hop-off bus tours of Quebec City often visit the Citadel of Quebec, with guides providing commentary about its history and current role as a base for Canadian forces. Purchase a ticket to explore the National Historic Site and access the Royal 22nd Regiment Museum (Musée Royal 22e Régiment), where weapons, uniforms, and other military artifacts are displayed. French- and English-language guided tours of the complex take place at least every hour.

Quebec City Hop-On Hop-Off Tour
Doug was our driver, gave a great deal of information that was not on the narrative. Rode from stop #2 all the way around on got off at #8 the second time. When we got back on several hours later at #8 we were fortunate enough to have Doug as our driver once again. Great day with his help!

Quebec City Hop-On Hop-Off Tour
We made many of our own reservations, independently from the excursions offered by the cruise line. Across the board going through Viator saved us on our costs. At one port we could not dock and it was not a problem getting a refund when we called from the ship explaining the situation. They are very helpful.

Quebec City Hop-On Hop-Off Tour
Great way to get an overview of the city. It was great that a stop was a quick walk from our cruise ship, but buy you tickets online in advance. We moved to the head of a very long line and got right on the waiting bus.

Quebec City Hop-On Hop-Off Tour
The day of our tour, the weather was extremely damp, windy and cold, so we stayed on and listened as the driver took us around this tour. We were able to still get great pictures thru the window and the audiotaping was very Informative.

Best from the Top Deck

Quebec City Hop-On Hop-Off Tour
Great tour for an introduction to Quebec. Busses run frequently enough to explore several areas of Quebec in one day. Make sure to pick up a schedule on the bus and learn where the stops are. Audio tour was informative, but if weather permits, the top deck is highly desirable as it is hard to see many of the points of interest from downstairs.

Although difficult to find seats during busy times, we stayed on the bus all day and enjoyed the tour.

When to Get There

Summer is the best time to visit: Tours are more frequent, the weather is warmer, and troops can be seen performing special ceremonies. Changing of the Guard ceremonies take place daily at 10am from June 24 through Labour Day in early September, while Beating of the Retreat ceremonies run at 5pm on Wednesdays in July and August. Nighttime tours by lantern take place from June to October.

Regimental Ceremonies at the Citadel

The Changing of the Guard marks the handover between the previous sentries on duty and the batch of troops taking over for them. Officers inspect the troops, with the military band providing music and the well-behaved mascot, Batisse the goat, also taking part. Meanwhile, the Beating of the Retreat marks the end of the day and sees guards assemble on the parade square to fire rifles. Troops wear bearskin hats and red regimental coats during both ceremonies.
