Silfra Fissure

Thingvellir National Park, Silfra, Iceland

The Basics

Many visitors see the Silfra fissure during trips to Thingvellir National Park. To truly appreciate the fissure, it’s best to go diving or snorkeling in the transparent water, which is lined with volcanic rocks.

Only PADI-qualified divers with dry-suit certification can dive in the fissure, but snorkeling is available to all travelers, even those with no prior experience. Guided snorkeling tours of the fissure typically depart from Reykjavik. Some organized tours include other activities, such as spelunking in Gjábakkahellir or Leiðarendi lava caves. Other tours make stops along the Golden Circle at sights including Haukadalur, a geothermal valley home to Gullfoss waterfall and the great geyser and nearby Strokkur.

Unique Amazing Experience
A friend suggested the snorkeling outing and I thought you are crazy snorkeling in Iceland in January! It was an AMAZING experience! Head and hands are the only part of your body that gets wet. Staff is fantastic!

This was an awesome tour and I would highly recommend! The water was about 2 degrees Celsius but you stay very dry in the dry suit. Your head and hands do get pretty wet but it's not too bad. You spend about 30 - 40 minutes in the water. The water is extremely clear and we had great visibility. I think it does help to have used a snorkel before so you know what to expect breathing only using your mouth but it's definitely not necessary.

We had Veronica for our snorkeling adventure. She was a great guide! We were a little bit early, but she started getting us fitted right away. There were only 4 of us in a group, which was awesome. We were the first ones out on the excursion, which was nice because we didn’t have to wait for anyone ahead of us!

Great experience with our instructor Chico, from Portugal! Caring, attentive, calm and secure, made this activity into a great fun and unforgettable experience for us! We didn't even felt the cold water (the drysuits really work!) L. Would totally do this again with this company.

I Had an unusual experience, but I would still highly recommend this tour to my friends and family. I am short 5' and heavy (but under the weight limit) The suit did not fit me properly due to my height. The tour guides were amazing and did all they could to help me. I am glad I tried it, even though I was not able to swim with my group.

Adventure Vikings was awesome! We had Maria as our guide, and she was excellent! She was super friendly and did a great job!! We had the option of using a dry or a wet suit. I choose the wet suit, and it was COLD. Definitely the coldest I have ever been. If you are a smaller build or get cold easily, I would definitely recommend using the dry suit (almost everyone who had the wet suit was shaking/was blue and purple). You will enjoy your experience more if you are warmer. Having said that, I still had a great time, but I wouldn’t wear the wet suit again. It was absolutely gorgeous!! The water is so clear and the view of the lake is stunning.

When to Get There

Because the water that feeds Silfra travels underground, it maintains a constant temperature and doesn’t freeze over. For this reason, snorkeling and diving tours are available year-round. Silfra is busier in summer; get there early in the day when crowds are thinner.

The Underwater World at Silfra

The Silfra fissure isn’t home to a multitude of marine life—most fish prefer the warmer waters of Thingvellir lake—but it is a breeding ground for many different types of algae. It also boasts some of the clearest waters in the world, with the natural purification process ensuring divers enjoy visibility exceeding 328 feet (100 meters).
