Medieval City of Rhodes

The Basics

Enter through the northern Eleftherias (Liberty) Gate and you’ll find yourself in Simis Square, characterized by its striking medieval architecture and home to the Hellenistic ruins of the Temple of Aphrodite. Nearby, the lively cafes and souvenirs stores of Ippokratous Square and Sokratous street are the main tourist hubs, providing a central point from which to explore Rhodes Old Town’s many attractions. Just about every sightseeing tour of Rhodes includes a visit to the medieval walled city, though it’s possible to get a more in-depth experience on a walking or scooter tour of the medieval city itself. Evening tours show off the cobbled alleyways at their most atmospheric.

Absolutely amazing time with Theodore, he was very attentive and gave very clear instructions on how to use the Trikkes which made it easy to manoeuvre through the old town and we felt very safe. Took amazing photos of us and gave us a great insight into Rhodes and it’s history. Also came with a heap of recommendations for other places to visit – this is a must book if you are starting your trip in Rhodes!!

What a nice, fun family outing this was! Our guide was waiting for us and provided a bottle of water for each of us, which was much appreciated, as it was the hottest day yet of the summer. It was our first time to ride the three wheeled scooters but he made sure we all completed a short practice run before we left so we would feel more comfortable. During the tour he was incredibly patient and encouraging with our twelve year old and was vigilant regarding safety when crossing streets or approaching uneven pavement. This tour helped orient us to the area, which helped over the next several days of our trip. Really nice guy!

We wanted to try out the trikes and see how well they worked out for us, a couple of active seniors. Not only were they very easy to ride and very stable but our guide was fantastic too! Be sure to do this tour very early in your visit, as you will get a great overview of the city!

Me and Joe had a fantastic day, our tour guide was so knowlodgeable and friendly and was not in a rush whatsoever, in fact we went over an hour! For free! He took so many pictures of us and we really had an enjoyable day looking at all the amazing sights and there was so much we didn't know about Rhodes, we learnt alot from him and had so much fun at the same time. I'm not the best driver and he made me feel so safe and by the end of it I was a proffesional!! I can honestly say this was the highlight of our holiday and would recommend to anyone! 5 star experience in my eyes if not more! if your looking for some wonderful culture, scenic views and fun at the same time, definatly need to try this!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The cobbled streets of the medieval city can be slick and uneven, so be sure to wear sturdy walking shoes.
  • Bring your camera, as this is one of the most photogenic areas in Greece.
  • Rhodes Old Town is not laid out on a grid and can be quite maze-like; bring a map, visit with a guide, or embrace getting lost and wandering.

How to Get There

The medieval city is accessible on foot from just about anywhere in the town of Rhodes. Driving generally isn’t advised, as parking in and around the old city is limited. If you’re coming from other parts of the island, consider hiring a taxi or taking the public bus.

When to Get There

The best time to visit the walled old city is during the winter months (December and January), when tourist crowds are at their lowest. Most shops and hotels remain open during this slower season, and weather is typically cool and sunny.

Attractions in the Medieval City The undisputed star of the medieval city is the dramatic hilltop Palace of the Grand Masters of the Knights of Rhodes, a fourteenth-century castle built by the Knights of St John. Leading down from the palace, the stone-paved Avenue of the Knights (Ippoton) is the city’s most famous medieval street. Also of interest is the Archaeological Museum, housed within a Gothic building that once houses a hospital. Head to the top of the clocktower for some of the best views over the historic district.
