Symi Island

Symi Island, Rhodes, Greece

The Basics

Natural beauty aside, Symi is most known for the Archangel Michael of Panormitis Monastery, a 15th-century complex that’s home to a library of rare Byzantine manuscripts and two museums that exhibit an eclectic mix of Orthodox icons and ancient fishing equipment. Tours typically depart from Rhodes’ main port, include scenic round-trip ferry rides, and give you time to check out the monastery and enjoy the sun-soaked Symi harbor.

Hotel pick up and drop off timely. Swimming stops on some days of the weeks - check when you go. If you don’t want to swim , the stop takes away from time in Symi. Although the Bay is picturesque and watching the swimmers is good fun. Upstairs seating gets windy and seating by the side of the boat can get wet !! Sea gets a little choppy for a bit , but overall a smooth ride Symi is beautiful with wonderful seafood and lovely shops - definitely worth the visit. Take your hat !

Symi Island & Panormiti, day cruise from Rhodes. High Speed Catamaran (60 min)
Well organised, very enjoyable day trip from Rhodes to 2 points on the stunning island of Symi with enough time for lunch and a dip onto the stunning blue water after a whistle-stop history of the island! Although it wasn't clear where we should meet the guide, she was easy to spot on disembarking at Symi and very helpful all throughout the day, even assisting with transfers back to the various hotels. Highly recommend!

Make sure you get to the boat early. I was told to get there at 8:30 because it left at 9. I got there at 8:25 and it was already crowded. Because of covid they have seats blocked off so people were getting aggressive about seating. That was not pleasant. I felt this trip was overbooked and there were not enough seats. Some people had to stand. Also, it should be noted that you stop at the monastery and there is another stop to allow people to swim ( I did not know about this stop). It was 1pm before we even got to Symi Island. At least everyone was wearing their mask on the boat. I appreciated that the captain included that in his verbal instructions.

The trip to Symi island was the highlight of our holiday! The boat was regularly cleaned and social distancing measures were in place. The island of Symi is beautiful and we had a lovely day wandering around the streets and eating by the sea. We would 100% recommend this trip!

Symi Island from Rhodes with transfers from Ialyssos, Ixia, and Kallithea
Well organised from start to finish. Hotel pick-up and drop off were included in the price which made things really easy. Communication with the local tour operator was great and questions answered promptly. The visit to the monastery was great as well as anchoring in St George Bay to allow swimming. Symi is beautiful and you can easily fill the 3 hours or so with things to do. Food and drink are very reasonable on the island but recommend taking drinks and snacks for the boat crossing (90 mins each way) Good views of Rhodes leaving and entering the harbour. It’s a full day out and could be tiring in the heat but great value for money and highly recommended.

Symi Island & Panormiti, day cruise from Rhodes. High Speed Catamaran (60 min)
Fantastic trip if you like boat trips to other Greek islands.... On board Sea Dreams , good covid sanitation and social distancing... We did this trip last year and again loved it... but we love boat trips fullstop... Symi is a beautful island and has one of the most beautful port frontages in Greece... (from my experience of 20 different islands....)....Lots of great eateries in the port.... and lovely walking the back streets.... One recommendation.... take a local mini bus to Pedi - a small fishing port some 30 minutes away in another bay... One or two rezzies, fishing boats, very few people - just 6 of us in the rezzie... perfect peace and quiet ..... !!! The cruise onto Panoramitis Monastery... amazing building and complex..... Pretty well all there is there... except two small cafes... A lovely day and a trip I'd do time after time ... !!!!!

Exploring the Beaches of Symi Island

No journey to Symi would be complete without some time on the beach. The closest beach to Symi Town is Nos, a family-friendly stretch of sand with sunbeds and other amenities. If you’re looking to escape the crowds, Panormitis Beach is the place to go, and can be combined with a monastery visit.
