Piazza del Colosseo, Rome, 00184

The Basics

As the second most popular attraction in Italy after only the Vatican, the Colosseum hosts some 4 million annual visitors, meaning that long lines are nearly inevitable without a skip-the-line tour. Choose from a number of tours suited to any age or interest, such as a Colosseum underground tour that heads beneath the arena floor to explore a network of passages; a small-group guided tour of the third tier; or a night tour that offers an eery experience and relief from the daytime heat. Consider group tours, self-guided audio tours, or private tours to gain an understanding of this well-preserved ancient Roman amphitheater and its historical importance.

Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum Guided Tour | Skip the Line Tickets
We really enjoyed our tour with Zenda—it was incredible and so worth it to be able to go into the colosseum dungeons, which is the main reason we booked a tour, and to have someone help explain what it is we were looking at. The meeting instructions were a little out of date from pre-Covid and it would be worthwhile to update as we had some difficulty finding our tour, but we would definitely still recommend and enjoyed our experience. Thank you!

VIP Colosseum Tour
We had a VIP small group tour of the Colosseum and it was incredible and well worth the price. Our guide was so knowledgeable providing a wealth of context and insight into what we were seeing which made the experience. The tour had to start a half hour later due to Covid restrictions and Viator kept us informed. I would highly recommend this tour.

Vatican and Colosseum Combo Tour: Don’t Wait in Line to See the Best of Rome
Elisabetta was PHENOMENAL. It’s our first trip post Covid and the family was totally impressed with the entire tour. Elisabetta’s knowledge was incredible. You would be lucky to have a Vatican tour with her. The afternoon tour was equally as perfect. The tour gave us insights into the Colosseum I did not know and I’ve been to Rome several times.

Guided Tour of Colosseum Underground, Arena and Forum
This is the way to go for any Colosseum options and tours. Our guide was non-stop knowledgeable and always answered questions as they arose. As a solo-trip, this was a highlight in my Rome itinerary. Highly recommended.

The VIP Colosseum Underground & Ancient Rome Small Group Tour
The colosseum underground tour was interesting, especially to see where the animals were kept and to hear about the lives of the gladiators. We had a different guide for the Ancient Rome Tour and he was a bit too chatty for us, but he was very passionate about history.

Exclusive Colosseum Underground and Roman Forum special tour| Super VIP Entry
The tour was interesting and informative. The only reason I didn’t give it 5-stars was because I would have liked the time to have been more evenly split between the colosseum and The Forum area. Instead we were at the Colosseum for 2 hours which felt a bit over done and 30 min at The Forum. Other than that, our guide was friendly and very knowledgeable.

Colosseum Underground by Night: Semi-Private Tour with Arena Floor
This was a tour in 2 parts. I want to rate our first tour guide Emile as 5 stars! Her tour was amazing!!! She was so knowledgeable and made walking towards the colosseum and seeing the sights delightful. Unfortunately we have to change to the colosseum guides when you get in. He was terrible. Kept repeating things, running long and holding up the groups behind us. The photos at night were incredible though

Skip the Line: Colosseum and Ancient Rome Small-Group Walking Tour Including Pantheon and Piazza Navona
We were so lucky to have Andrada and her excellent knowledge and ability in explaining the colosseum and its ancient history. Much more informative than we expected. She let us feel like Romans! It is quite a walk from the colosseum to the Pantheon when the weather is warm!!

Small-Group Ancient Rome and Colosseum Underground Tour
An experienced guide puts the cherry on top of a brilliant tour. I have been to the Colosseum before, but feel like I have never really experienced it fully until now. Cannot recommend enough

Colosseum Underground Tour with Roman Forum, Palatine Hill & Gladiator Arena
Our guide did an absolutely fabulous job! She was passionate about the history of Rome and that showed in her presentation. I learned so much about the colosseum and how and why it was built.

How to Get There

Alongside the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, the Colosseum is in the center of Rome, just across the street from the Colosseo station on Line B of the city's underground metro system, which also stops at the main Termini train station.

When to Get There

Since the Colosseum is most crowded during the middle of the day, begin or end your Rome tour with a visit first thing in the morning or just before last entry (which is an hour before closing time) in the late afternoon. Alternatively, choose a night tour for a unique, less crowded experience. Summer is the most popular time of year to visit, while the site receives fewer crowds in November through February, aside from the Christmas and New Year holidays.
