Colosseum

Piazza del Colosseo, Rome, 00184

The Basics

As the second most popular attraction in Italy after only the Vatican, the Colosseum hosts some 4 million annual visitors, meaning that long lines are nearly inevitable without a skip-the-line tour. Choose from a number of tours suited to any age or interest, such as a Colosseum underground tour that heads beneath the arena floor to explore a network of passages; a small-group guided tour of the third tier; or a night tour that offers an eery experience and relief from the daytime heat. Consider group tours, self-guided audio tours, or private tours to gain an understanding of this well-preserved ancient Roman amphitheater and its historical importance.

Great tour of the Roman Forum and Colosseum
This tour was great introduction to the Roman forum and Colosseum. Our guide was fantastic and a lot of passion for showing us the area which got us all very excited. The guide had great insight and knowledge about the area and Italy as a whole. The tour started on time and the guide kept things running smoothly. The arena floor was a really amazing perspective of the Colosseum that I really recommend. The guide left us at an area so that we could explore more if we wanted which I really appreciated.

Tickets Colosseum and Roman Forum with Multimedia Video
We had tickets for Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine hill, Vatican museum and Sistine chapel and I really recommend all of this iconic places. I just want to say that lady in tourist office was really friendly and help as a lot to plan how to visit all of these places, as we were really short with time and we travel with two babies and we had to make covid test before tours (she also help us with that), so without her help we wouldn't see all of these places :)

Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum Guided Tour | Skip the Line Tickets
We really enjoyed our tour with Zenda—it was incredible and so worth it to be able to go into the colosseum dungeons, which is the main reason we booked a tour, and to have someone help explain what it is we were looking at. The meeting instructions were a little out of date from pre-Covid and it would be worthwhile to update as we had some difficulty finding our tour, but we would definitely still recommend and enjoyed our experience. Thank you!

VIP Colosseum Tour
We had a VIP small group tour of the Colosseum and it was incredible and well worth the price. Our guide was so knowledgeable providing a wealth of context and insight into what we were seeing which made the experience. The tour had to start a half hour later due to Covid restrictions and Viator kept us informed. I would highly recommend this tour.

Skip the Line Colosseum Tour for Kids and families
Serena was the perfect private guide for us. She had so much energy and passion for the Colosseum that the kids by the end of the tour are so in love with this magical place. If you have come a long way (Australia) make sure you make the most of your time and book a great, fun tour. The knowledge of Serena made to tour so unforgettable. Thanks so much. A+++

Small-Group Ancient Rome and Colosseum Underground Tour
Isn't it obligatory to visit the Colosseum when in Rome? Our guide was a knowledgeable archaeologist who spoke excellent English (for our English-speaking tour group) and gave us a a very informative tour of the Colosseum, the Colosseum dungeons, and the Roman Forum. I strongly suggest that everyone signing up for this tour bring a bottle of water as you'll need hydration after 20,000 steps.

Colosseum Underground
We got to see the underground and several layers of the colosseum. We walked Palatine Hill and the Roman forum and it was actually really great. Our guide was awesome and he really knew a lot! He was also very patient and understanding with our toddler.

Undergrounds Areas Colosseum and Roman Forum Small Group Tour
Renata was a wonderful tour guide. She taught us so much and was incredibly knowledgeable. She was very engaging and kept our kids interested on a tour that may seem long to them. They obviously loved the Colosseum the most and even more since she was willing to answer all their questions. Thank you so much, Renata. This was the highlight of our trip!

Skip-the-Lines Colosseum and Roman Forum Tour for Kids and Families
This tour met all expectations, the sights and experience of visiting the Colosseum and Roman Forum was memorable and enjoyable for the whole family. Our guide (Simona) was knowledgeable, engaging and especially patient with our kids (6 and 8 year old active boys). We all had a wonderful time and as such can recommend this tour to other families traveling with younger kids. Would probably suggest that under 6 year olds may struggle with the duration (3 solid hours).

Ultimate Colosseum Underground Night Tour
The tour was interesting and well organized. The two tour guides knew a lot about the city and the colosseum. Although I thought initially we would have spent the entire time in the underground, it actually was just enough. The only thing is we had a very difficult time finding the starting point; maybe better instructions like find Cafe Roma and go around to the left of it. Thank you for a great experience.

Fast Track: Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum Tour
Communication from Crown Tours was excellent. They offered an additional tour to go under the Colosseum which was well worth it. The tour of the Palatine Hill and Forum was amazing and lead by a knowledgeable and humorous guide. We loved it

Colosseum with Arena Access and Ancient Rome Small Group Tour
Obviously all of the places are amazing to visit and it was nice to skip the line, but our tour guide Dennis is what made this special. He was SO knowledgeable about the colosseum, Forum and Roman history in general. And not only was he knowledgeable, he was passionate and interested in what he was saying which made the tour much more engaging. Thanks, Dennis!

When to Get There

Since the Colosseum is most crowded during the middle of the day, begin or end your Rome tour with a visit first thing in the morning or just before last entry (which is an hour before closing time) in the late afternoon. Alternatively, choose a night tour for a unique, less crowded experience. Summer is the most popular time of year to visit, while the site receives fewer crowds in November through February, aside from the Christmas and New Year holidays.
