The Basics

Reaching the remote parts of the cave requires hiking through a rain forest, crossing three rivers on foot, swimming through parts of the cave, and even going up a narrow ladder to get to its deeper, darker chambers. Efforts are rewarded with the sight of the “Crystal Maiden”: the skeleton of a young female, fully preserved, from thousands of years ago.

Along the hike, there are also ancient ceramics to see and the chance to immerse yourself in Maya culture. Actun Tunichil Muknal is protected by the government and is only accessible through a guided tour.

Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave with Local Lunch from San Ignacio
I did 2 cave tours with Belize Family Adventure, and both were great. The ATM cave is a must see if near San Ignacio. The tour was informative, and the meal they provided was delicious.

Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave with Local Lunch from San Ignacio
The ATM Tour was amazing! This is a must do if you’re visiting Belize. Our guide, Abraham (Mayan descent) was extremely knowledgeable and proud of his heritage. He gave us great insight into the Mayan culture. The tour consists of hiking a short distance, crossing 3 streams and wading(swimming) through the cave to the ceremonial chambers where you will find pottery and skeletons of the deceased. I highly recommend this tour.

Incredible Experiece w/ Juan Carlos

Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave Tour and Picnic
At first, I was a little skeptical of this adventure, as one of my friends chose this activity. This was the highlight of our time in San Ignacio. I HIGHLY recommend Juan Carlos as a tour guide. He was amazing and knew so many facts. He was patient with our group and helped us all as we had a range of swimming levels. We chatted like old friends and it made our time doing the ATM tour one to remember. The lunch post-tour was also super delicious and they provided hotel pick-up and drop-off. If you are in San Ignacio at all, I'd recommend taking an entire day to do this tour.

Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave with Local Lunch from San Ignacio
This is a must do during your trip to the Cayo District of Belize if you are able-bodied. Belize Family Adventure did a great job of handling this tour. Our guide Eduard and driver Edwin could not have been more informative and friendly. Swimming, spelunking, and climbing in the ATM cave was challenging and exciting...at times you feel like Indiana Jones in there! To top it off, the traditional Belizean lunch after the hike back to the van was one of our favorite meals in country. We highly recommend this tour!

Enthralling tour, easily the coolest place I’ve ever been

Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave Tour and Picnic
This is easily the coolest thing I’ve ever done. The hike begins with an easy water crossing and then a chill 1 mile walk through the jungle with two other river crossings. The adventure begins at the cave entrance when you jump into the refreshing blue water. From there you are in the water for the next quarter mile. The cave is cavernous and beautiful, filled with incredible rock formations. There are some spots where you go through narrow passes but nothing is too challenging. At the quarter mile point, you climb up on the ledge and follow the path of the Mayas, entering a living museum. The cave is filled with thousands of ceramics and several human skeletons. Our guides, Eric and Hector, told us many stories about why the Maya entered the cave and about their belief systems and culture. The entire tour you are surrounded by an absolutely surreal landscape that feels like you are truly in the center of the earth. On the way out, we took some more fun routes slipping down natural rock slides and swimming in the pool outside the cave. Our tour finished with a delicious chicken and rice lunch. When you come here, please do so with extreme respect for this place. Some of the cultural remains have been destroyed by careless visitors. No other place like this exists on earth.

Our tour guide Eric was amazing. We were the first ones to the cave and got to experience the crystal clear waters. Eric explained everything so well and we had a lot of fun with him. Lunch after was super good as well. Amazing tour would definitely recommend!

Hue was very knowledgeable about the history of the cave. He gave an extensive background of the Mayans so it really made everything come to life and make sense. The cave it self was an amazing experience,it felt like something off Indiana Jones.

Great tour, this was my second time doing the cave. The tour guide, Patrick is the best in the business. Highly, highly recommended.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Cameras are not allowed inside the cave.

  • You will be in the cave for about three hours, navigating some very constricted, confined areas; because of this, it’s not recommended for people who suffer from claustrophobia.

  • Bring water shoes, socks (you will need to remove your shoes at one point on the tour), and an extra set of dry clothes, socks, and shoes.
