Into the land of tangerines closer to the ancient city of Butrint we organise the Mandarina Tour, a truly individually guided experience with local farmers and local dishes. Farmers will give us some basic information on how to collect the fruit, how to respect the processes involved and then take part in an age old tradition of picking the delicious fruit. After the wooden crates are full we'll stop and rest, in an idyllic spot where farmers will prepare a sumptuous lunch with traditional fayre: byrek, tava, feta cheese, two kind of petulla, vegetables, three kind of jam, olives, orange juice, water and red wine. The taste of our land is on the table prepared with smiles. The head farmer will then address us with a talk all about tangerines, the history of our village, the productivity of the business and about his passion for the sun blessed fruit.

The fascinating old centre of Gjirokaster is on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. Largely medieval, with some lovely architecture to admire, reflecting the town’s wealthy past, it is built on a hill overlooking a valley and mountains. This interesting museum will give a good impression of the way of living in Albania during the Ottoman period. For lunch we will leave town and drive to a nearby lake, where some specialties of the area can be tasted. On our way back to Saranda, we will pass from the national park Syri I Kalter. In this peaceful forest, we will walk (5 min) to the crystal clear spring called Blue Eye, where 900 m3 water per minute is coming from deep down the earth. If time permits, there will be a short coffee break at the restaurant next to the fast streaming river in the park, before heading back to the port of Saranda.

This actual spring is the largest and a most interesting source among the other 18 springs that flow from Mali i Gjërë. It has been declared a Natural Monument and has an oval shape similar to the shape of an eye. The spring has great depth, which goes up to 50m, and it’s surrounded by dense and lush vegetation. All in all, the area offers a great time out for adults, as well as for children.

The Ancient City of Butrint, an archeological site in Vlorë County, Albania, 14 kilometres in the south of Sarandë. Located on a hill overlooking the Vivari Channel and part of the Butrint National Park. The city is considered as one of the most important archaeological sites in Albania. On the strength of the immense wealth of cultural, historical and natural value with a considerable history, Butrint was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1992 and further a National Park in 2000. Duration 2-3 hours.

On this tour, we will tour the village of Qeparo, which has a breathtaking location, right after the Palermo Bay. It’s a village which has attracted an immense number of tourists, due to its beautiful traditional architecture, cobbled alleys and old churches. Also, in the village, sits the castle of Ali Pasha Tepelena, which was designed by the French Army architect and nowadays displays special architectonic and touristic values.

The austere and beautiful town of Gjirokastra began to spread downhill from its castle in the 13th century. The castle still stands on its hill, overlooking the whole city and the river valley below. From that lofty point, the grey stone of the houses below and the grey slates of their roofs blend into the hillside, distinguished from it only by their whitewashed walls. As one of the city's most famous sons Ismail Kadare, wrote in Chronicle in Stone, Gjirokastra is "a surprising city, which seemed as if it had come out of the valley unexpectedly, like a prehistoric being, and clambered up with difficulty, stitching itself on the side of the mountain". Gjirokastra became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2005. It had been awarded the status of a 'museum-city' by the Albanian government, which gave legal protection to its architectural heritage and kept new building out of the historic center.
