The Basics

Even with its past, the area is quite safe for travelers and is one of the most fascinating day trip options from Seoul. The DMZ can only be visited as part of an organized, guided tour, during which travelers get the chance to see the Joint Security Area (JSA), also known as Panmunjom, where the North and South met for peace talks during the war. Visitors can also see both North Korean and South Korean soldiers each guarding their respective sides of the DMZ. Other common stops on the tour include Imjingak Park, the 3rd Infiltration Tunnel, Freedom Bridge, and the Dora Observatory, where it's possible to look across the border into North Korea.

[Premium Private DMZ Tour] with N-Seoul Tower include Korean Authentic lunch
Chance Kim was a fantastic tour guide! He made the whole experience so fun and personable - it was like going on a trip with a good friend. The trip itself was comfortable, lunch was fantastic, and everything went smoothly. I would definitely recommend Mr.Kim for any of the tours that he offers!

I cannot say enough good things about our tour. Our guide (Sunny) was so wonderful! On the bus ride to the start of the tour she gave very helpful historical information in a fun and engaging way. She took care of all our needs and explained the itinerary clearly. Each member of the tour group was given an ear reciever which connected to Sunny's microphone so we could always hear explanations clearly. It was a great experience that I would recommend to anyone!

Half-Day Korean DMZ Tour from Seoul
Had a great experience despite the DMZ area near the border was closed due to government restrictions. The tour provided a good alternative, and our guide Sadie was amazing!

Amended tour due to closed DMZ

Private DMZ tour from Seoul
Due to circumstances beyond anyone’s control, the DMZ was closed on our allotted tour date. As such an alternative tour was arranged, which our group of five adults fully enjoyed. Our guide, Mr Song, was fantastic. He was prompt, professional and very informative, keeping us up to date with information and also had a great background to explain all the sites we saw and the historical significance. Thank you Mr Song, for being a great guide to Seoul.

we were unable to actually visit the DMZ because of swine flu but it was still a fruitful experience. The bus was prompt and our guide was informative. Only thing that could’ve been better was the war museum, we were left to walk around on our own, which was fine, but personally don’t think it’s enough considering the price of the trip. But it was still an enjoyable time and would love to redo the tour during a time when there’s no more swine flu!

Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) Half-Day Tour from Seoul
Although the fever outbreak kept us from visiting the DMZ, we still enjoyed our time with our tour guide Katie in visiting many of the other notable sites near the DMZ. Regardless of the bad weather, it was still special. Thanks!

Full Day Korean DMZ Tour including the War Memorial of Korea
Although the DMZ has a bit of a carnival atmosphere it is non the less an important and serious place worth visiting. It would be a good idea for young people to study up on Korean history and the Korean conflict in particular.

A Trip to the DMZ

I think the trip to the 3rd tunnel was an amazing experience. Seeing across the DMZ at the observation tower was chilling. Nancy, our guide, did an excellent job of explaining and contextualizing the affect on the people that have been directly affected as well as explaining in terrific detail the creation of the DMZ.

Private DMZ Tour
The guide was great, he is part of the south Korean Army and was very knowledgable about the DMZ and gave us lots of insights into the history and was happy to answer any questions anyone had. The trip was slightly amended due to the swine flu outbreak but the only thing we could not do was the infiltration tunnel.

Full-day Customizable private DMZ tour with Korean BBQ
The flexibility was the best! Since the DMZ was closed, we got to visit all the places my father really wanted to see. He was stationed here in 62 & 63. He has been wanting to see these places again for the past several years. Our tour guide was the best! She accommodated my 81 year old dad with what ever he wanted to see. It was an adventure for all of us! It was just my father and I who came - a trip of a life time for me! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

DMZ( demilitarized zone) includes the 3rd Infiltration tunnel and observatory
Harry runs this tour and he is extremely knowledge about Korean history, the war, the DMZ and the political situation then and now, and he is extremely engaging when he speaks about these things. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him and his tour.

How to Get There

Travelers wanting to go to the DMZ must visit with a guide, and tours need to be booked at least a few days ahead of time for security reasons. Tours typically include pickup and drop-off from either your hotel in Seoul or a central meeting point, so there's no hassle with transportation to and from the various points of interest.

When to Get There

Tours to the DMZ can be canceled on short notice, so it's a good idea to book for your first full day in Seoul so you have time to reschedule as needed. For the best weather, plan to visit in spring or fall. Expect high humidity and more frequent rainfall during the summer months, and dress for chilly weather in winter—temperatures tend to hover in the 20s and 30s F.

Dress to Impress at the DMZ

The DMZ has a strictly enforced dress code, partly because North Korean soldiers have been known to take photos of poorly dressed tourists to use in propaganda "proving" that other nations are too poor to afford proper clothing. Leave the ripped jeans, sandals, and halter tops at the hotel.
