Aside from serving as the capital of South Australia and a home base for many visitors to the area, Adelaide is also a common gateway into the world-famous Australian Outback. The 950-mile (1,530-km) scenic drive to Alice Springs is a classic road trip for Aussies and travelers alike, so whether you have time for the whole multi-day journey or prefer a shorter jaunt, there's plenty to see. Here are some of the highlights.

  • Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park, set about five hours from Adelaide by road, features South Australia's largest mountain range. Be sure to visit Wilpena Pound, a massive natural basin and prime hiking spot.
  • Coober Pedy, known as the "Opal Capital of the World," attracts visitors for two reasons: its precious gems, and the interesting underground homes where most of the town resides. The drive from Adelaide takes nearly nine hours, so many tours include an overnight stay in one of the subterranean hotels.
  • The Oodnadatta Track, one of the most famous Outback tracks, is popular among first-time offroaders. Although you could drive the entire 385-mile (620-km) gravel and dirt path in one day, most travelers choose to camp along the way and enjoy stops at Lake Eyre and William Creek.
