Aokigahara Forest, Japan

The Basics

The Aokigahara Forest is made up mostly of hemlock fir, Japanese cypress, and other evergreen needle-leaf trees. Because it is so dense and easy to get lost in, for centuries it has been a popular place for the desperate to go to end their lives. There are signs throughout the forest warning people of the danger of getting lost here, and asking them to seek help if they’re feeling suicidal. Many Japanese people believe that the forest is haunted.

Keen hikers can go to Aokigahara independently and explore at their own pace. Alternatively, some sightseeing tours around Fuji and the Fujigoko region include a stop at Aokigahara. There’s a fun cave to explore that can only be accessed on a guided tour.

Explore Mt. Fuji Ice Cave in Aokigahara Forest
Tada was an amazing tour guide - he’s super knowledgeable about Aokigahara Forest and the Ice cave and has an amazing humour which made the whole experience so enjoyable. Tada is very experienced and made sure we were all good, provided all the safety gear and showed that he really knows what he’s doing. The tour was super fun, especially if you love the tranquility of forests and nature. Absolutely recommend to anyone of all ages.

A must for anyone visiting the Mt. Fuji area. My guide Tada was very knowledgeable and friendly. The cave itself is huge and you get to explore it in its entirety. Time did fly by and I wish the tour lasted just a little bit longer.

We had a fantastic time exploring the ice cave and walking through the forest with our guide, Tada. He was careful to ensure that we were never in any danger despite the tricky terrain. He was patient and had many entertaining stories, as the forest was his playground. Logistics-wise, everything went perfectly too. We were offered hotel pick up and drop off, and all gear was provided. We only needed a good jacket to keep us warm and good trekking shoes that were waterproof.

The entire experience was amazing. He picked us up at our hotel drop us off after the tour so it was very convenient. Finally it was just us 3 so we had all of his attention and could ask as many questions as we’d like. The guide was really interesting and taught us a lot about the forest and the caves. The ice cave was really nice, especially the blind minute in 100% darkness. Loved it and recommend it !

Tada was such a fantastic guide for our time exploring the Ice Cave in Aokigahara. We were very impressed with his knowledge of the area, and his willingness to share his personal experiences as well. The forest and cave are both absolutely stunning, and very cool to see. We had a fabulous time and will definitely be in contact with Tada on our return to do this tour again, or to climb Mount Fuji. Thank you, Tada-san!

Best Tour Ever

This trip was the highlight of our vacation to Japan. The Aokigahara Forest was a beautiful sight to behold in the winter and the ice cave exploration was amazing. Our guide Tadasuke was the best. He speaks fluent english and explained everything to us. The tour was super personal as it was only my husband and myself. That day. We also lucked out as it was a beautiful +16C day and we also got to see Mount Fuji. We highly recommend this tour for anyone who wants to truly remember Japan. Thanks Tadasuke! You are the best.

Unique sportive trip through an awesome icecave with a great tourguide.

After being picked up at the station, we got coverals. The advice was to wear warm coats, but I would suggest to wear a sweater and leave your coat in the car, as it can be hot if you are not used to climbing over rocks. After a beautiful walk through the forest, with nice information about the surroundings and the wildlife, the decent into the ice cave begins. The guide leads the way through the dark cave, over patches of ice and rocks, between beatiful ice stalagmites and stalactites. With warnings and guidance, we got to a ice plain in the cave. It was an extremely cool trip for us.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • If you do happen to come across the remains of someone who has died here, report your discovery to the local authorities.

  • For your safety, stick to the marked trails throughout the forest.

  • A popular walking route follows a marked track from the Fugaku Wind Cave to the Ice Cave.

How to Get There

The most convenient way of reaching Aokigahara from Tokyo is by bus. Take the JR Bus Kanto from Tokyo Station, or the Basuta Shinjuku from Shinjuku Station, and get off at Kawaguchiko. Each trip takes about two hours. From Kawaguchiko, take a local bus to Aokigahara, or hike there.

When to Get There

While it’s possible to visit at any time, Japan’s winters are cold and it’s common to find snow at ground level around Mount Fuji in the winter. Mid-summer can be very hot and humid. For the most comfortable hiking conditions, visit in spring or autumn.

Hike Up Mount Fuji

In the summer, Mount Fuji is covered in climbers. Most start their ascent from the fifth station part-way up the mountain, but adventure-lovers can begin from the pilgrim’s route that monks traditionally followed, starting at the base of the mountain. This adds a full day of walking to the normal two-day climb, but the more gentle rise in altitude can be a good option for fit hikers.
