4 Must-Visit Neighborhoods in Tokyo

4 Must-Visit Neighborhoods in Tokyo

While you’re likely to find something to marvel at with nearly every turn in Tokyo, these four neighborhoods are each worth a visit for their distinct takes on Japanese culture, commerce, and cuisine. Read on to find out which one is right for you.

Ginza Shopping District

Travelers in search of Tokyo's premier department stores, restaurants, and tea houses can find just about everything in this neighborhood set south of Yaesu and Kyobashi. This high-end hot spot is home to the flagship stores for some of the country's top fashion houses, and on Saturday and Sunday between noon and 5pm, the district's main street is open to pedestrian traffic only.

Harajuku

Ginza may be home to big-name western fashion, but Harajuku is the real style capital for those looking to experience the pinnacle of Japanese pop culture. You'll find a colorful subculture that speaks directly to youth and includes independent boutiques and hip cafes.

Shibuya

This spot is home to one of Tokyo's busiest railway stations, and like Giza and Harajuku, it's one of the country’s top fashion centers. In addition to incredible shopping, Shinuya also offers some of Tokyo's best nightlife. Crowded clubs, tasty restaurants, and hip bars make it an ideal stop for visitors looking to dance and drink into the late night hours.

Odaiba

This man-made island is located across the Rainbow Bridge in Tokyo Bay. With tons of shopping options, this destination is also known for being one of only two places in Tokyo where the seashore is accessible. Ride the massive Ferris wheel, visit Toyota's exhibition hall, or wander the halls of a Venice-themed shopping mall.
