Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien (Museum of Fine Arts) Tours

The royal Habsburgs were collectors, and their holdings—from armor to artwork—are the heart of the vast Kunsthistorisches Museum. On Vienna’s Ringstrasse, you’ll find it all in a palatial building whose octagonal dome lords over thousands of artifacts, masterpieces, and treasures that make up one of Austria’s foremost museums.
The Basics
While you could duck into the Kunsthistorisches Museum for an hour, strategic planning helps make the most of even a quick trip. Choose a laser-focused visit based around a couple of collections, or opt for a longer stay with time to wander between galleries. Since the vast museum can be overwhelming, a guided tour ensures you don’t miss the highlights.
To save time, buy a skip-the-line ticket to the museum in advance. Vienna City Card holders get a discount, and some tours of Vienna include admission.
Things to Know Before You Go
- The museum’s side entrance, located at Burgring 5, has barrier-free access for wheelchairs.
- Wheelchairs are available on loan at the museum—reserve in advance.
How to Get There
The Kunsthistorisches Museum sits on Maria-Theresien-Platz in Vienna. Served by the U2 and U3 trains, Volkstheater is the closest underground station—and trams D, 1, 2, 46, 49, and 71 stop nearby. Or, take bus 57 to the Burgring stop. Taxis are plentiful.
When to Get There
While a steady stream of visitors keeps the Kunsthistorisches Museum busy year-round, the expansive galleries rarely feel crowded. To avoid the most popular times, though, go on a weekday. In addition to the permanent collections, rotating exhibitions display pieces from around the world—check the museum’s website for upcoming events.
Visiting the Kunsthistorisches Museum Café
From the black-and-white floor to the soaring ceiling, the dome hall is a lovely setting for the Kunsthistorisches Museum café. Breakfast is served on weekends and public holidays, and the regular menu includes a mix of Austrian and international items. Reservations (which you can make on the museum’s website) are a must, and you’ll need a museum ticket to enter the café.
Practical Info
Take metro line U3 to Volktheater station, or tram D to the Kunsthistorisches stop.

Private tour of the picture gallery of the Art History Museum VIenna
The Vienna Museum of Art History's collection is the best place to see and to understand what distinguishes a brilliant artist from the wonderful and the good from the mediocre. If you want not only to walk through the museum and enjoy the works of Rembrandt, Rubens, Vermeer, Raphael and Caravaggio, but also aspire to understand what distinguishes their works from those of their less famous contemporaries, this tour is for you.
In Peter Bruegel's largest world collection, we'll take a closer look at The Hunters in the Snow to understand why it was in the 20th century that this painting became the “cold distant peak of unattainable art“, and why it was a huge risk to choose such a controversial subject in the 16th century.
We will look at the requirements for Rubens' work and see the difference between works made for his powerful commissioners and those created for his own pleasure. The Capture of Samson by his disciple Antonis van Dyck will make it clear to us which qualities of his work have allowed him to occupy a separate place in the history of art, at least equal to his teachers.
Vermeer's work The Allegory of The Art and Caravaggio's Madonna with the Beads will show us the most virtuoso showcase of mimesis, the main principle of Western aesthetics. And Parmigianino's works in the contrary will show us the first attempts of art to escape from the path of perfect vitality.
If you wish to see outstanding art and aspire to understand what makes it great, this art tour is perfect for you.
