The Basics

Reynisfjara Beach is a common stop-off on South Iceland day tours from Reykjavik, which typically combine a visit to Reynisfjara with trips to other nearby destinations, such as Skaftafell National Park, Sólheimajökull glacier, Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, Seljalandsfoss waterfall, and Skógafoss waterfall.

Multi-day tours from the capital also tend to combine south shore attractions with sights around the Reykjanes Peninsula, Golden Circle, Borgarfjörður valley, and Snæfellsnes Peninsula.

Great tour
Knowledgeable and friendly tour guide and the company was organized. I had a prior glacier tour scheduled but they cancelled due to the weather but this tour re-arranged the itinerary so we were still able to hike. The hike was moderately intensive but worth it.

Small Group South Coast, Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach Adventure from Reykjavik
This trip lasts all day, and you will see so much! Our guide, Christian (sp?) clearly loves Iceland and his Icelandic heritage. He gave so much wonderful information as we drove, I learned so much! The glacier lagoon and diamond beach were highlights. Also, Pieter got us safely back to Reykjavík through some pretty nasty road conditions and weather. Take this tour! And please tip your guides, we were the only ones who did and they were so great!

This was a great tour. Our guide Inky was very knowledgeable, insightful, and funny. Weather was sketchy at best and he was able to maneuver our trip so that we got the very best of the stops. I would highly recommend this trip and this company. Well done.

2-Day Tour: Blue Ice Cave, Jokulsarlon, Black Beach, and Waterfalls
This was an amazing tour/experience. We’ve seen all the waterfalls, both beaches, and got on a fantastic ice cave tour. Our tour guide Guzzeppe was knowledgeable, caring, and very reasonable. On the firat day we visited all waterfalls that are on the list, the Black beach, and stopped close to a glacier. In total, in day 1 we drove 450km to town of Hofn for a night sleep. On the second day, we made a complete trip back, while stopping at the Diamond beach, ice cave tour (both of which are near the Glacier Lagoon), and Vik. The tour is long yet extremely fulfilling. Of course, due to the outbreak of corona virus, we saw limited number of people, but all attractions were still on. Really cannot recommend this tour enough.

Upon arrival we had a fantastic start! Without doubt one of the favorite. The scene was amazingly gorgeous. The Glacier Lagoon is definitely the top must see here in Iceland. Thank you again for a wonderful day. Viator is definitely a respectable and professional tour experience.

2-Day Tour: Blue Ice Cave, Jokulsarlon, Black Beach, and Waterfalls
This trip was so amazing. Our tour got delayed due to weather concerns, and our guide still managed to get us to every spot on the list, plus some! Our guide was Eddy, and he was amazing! He was kind, funny, and very knowledgeable about Iceland - especially the geography. He took us to places that he knew about, that were not on the list, and even made extra stops for us to see the full moon over the glacier lagoon. Every stop was breathtaking. I was scared about how the driving conditions would be, but even in horrible wind and snow, our guide Eddy was confident and drove as smoothly as he could. I cannot recommend this tour enough! Dress warmly!!!!

What a great tour! Our guide, Aaron was AMAZING! The waterfalls were gorgeous. The glacier hike was spectacular (a little more strenuous than I was expecting) and the views were great. The weather could have been better, but that's Iceland in the winter I suppose. The Lava museum was interesting and well done, and we stopped for ice cream before going back to Reykjavik. All in all, one of the best tours I've been on.

A little bit of everything that covers a fantastic day out. On our way back, our guide spotted the Northern Lights and she detour the mini van so that she can park and let us enjoy the lights.

Small Group South Coast, Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach Adventure from Reykjavik
Wow! What a day we had! Our guides were both brilliant! It is a VERY long day, hence having two guides. We had several stops, for snacks, waterfalls, black sand beaches and pretty churches, which broke the day nicely. Final destination is the Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach, both a long long way from Reykjavik. Never mind, absolutely worth it! One of the most stunning sceneries anyone is going to witness on this planet, just incredible. It got dark on our way back, but our adventure wasn't over. We stop at yet another waterfall, but on this occasion it was lit, which made it truly magical. The setting could not have been more stunning: silver water falling from above, thousands of stars in a clear sky free from light pollution and then, to top it all, the Northern Lights appear in the horizon. Amazing! I don't think you get a sense of Iceland as the majestic country that it is if you miss this trip.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • With its striking landscape, this black beach is a must for photography enthusiasts.

  • The nearby Dyrhólaey promontory, accessible via Routes 1 and 218, also offers striking views of the beach.

  • The waves here can be treacherous; keep your distance from the shore.

  • The uneven, stone-littered surface of the beach makes it unsuitable for wheelchairs and strollers.

When to Get There

Reynisfjara Beach is recognized for its dramatic beauty. Summer is perhaps the best time to come here, with long, lingering sunsets and sunrises providing ideal lighting conditions for photographers. This is also the best time to view birds in the nearby cliffs. Don’t expect to sunbathe, even in summer, as winds are strong here year-round.

Reynisfjara Beach on the Big Screen

Due to its unusual appearance, Reynisfjara Beach has been used as a filming location for Hollywood movies and hit TV series. In Game of Thrones, it served as the beach at Eastwatch-by-the-Sea in season seven. It was also used for scenes in Darren Aronofsky’s 2014 religious epic Noah and in Star Trek: Into Darkness.
