Sólheimajökull Glacier

Vik, Iceland

The Basics

While a few hardy explorers have managed to summit Eyjafjallajökull, ascending the volcano is considered dangerous, with a deadly crevasse-ridden glacier at the top. Many day tours of the south coast from Reykjavik, whether by car or Jeep, venture to Eyjafjallajökull volcano. These tours typically make stops at other destinations in south Iceland, such as Seljalandsfoss waterfall, Skógafoss waterfall, black-sand beaches at Dyrhólaey and Vik, the Thórsmörk valley, and Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. For aerial views of the crater, steaming hot springs, and rugged peaks, opt for a helicopter tour over the volcano.

wonderful experience
It was our first experience on a glacier and everything went super well. We were expected at the yellow bus in the parking lot. We got the necessary equipment. The guide was very professional and especially made us aware of safety. Very nice experience

Small Group Glacier Experience from Solheimajokull Glacier
The glacier was amazing. Great stopping points for informative facts and questions. Guide was very helpful with gear and safety. No worries throughout. If you have reasonable balance, this is very doable. If always looking for handrails, not for you.

What a spectacular day with Joao as our very informative and safety-conscious guide! We saw and did so much - the glacier trip was the highlight of course but the waterfalls and black sand beach were not to be missed. Thanks again!

3-hour Glacier Hike on Sólheimajökull
Amazing landscape, patient and informative and unrushed experience provided by our guide Glacier. He made us feel very safe and helped take photos for us, thank you. Nice leisurely hike up the glacier, crossed some crevasses, got to go near some caves and watched some ice climbing. Great morning out

Glacier hike a must

South Coast with Glacier Walk - Minibus from Reykjavik
I gave a review earlier for this excellent excursion. Wanted to add that it was much cheaper than booking the same through your cruise ship. Also due to regulation minibus will not pick you up at your hotel, only at a bus stop. We were confused but they called the hotel and told us where to meet the bus. Very considerate of them.

Solheimajokull Glacier 3-Hour Small-Group Hike
Amazing hike, beautiful views! 10/10 recommend, ended up being our favourite thing we did in Iceland. They provide crampons which make walking on the ice easy, no hiking experience needed but do recommend having a good general fitness level as it can be a steep climb.

Iceland’s Volcanoes

Though Eyjafjallajökull volcano may be better known among Europeans following its 2010 eruption, it is but one of many active volcanoes in Iceland. Its larger neighbor, Katla, just east of Eyjafjallajökull, is even more mighty and powerful. Katla, which lasts erupted in 1918, lies under the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap—the fourth-largest glacier in Iceland. It is feared that an eruption of Katla could melt the glacier and cause catastrophic flooding.
