Departure Time

9:00 AM
After Amman hotel pickup, travel northeast to Umm el-Jimal by private, air-conditioned vehicle. Your driver will identify places of interest on route, but will not act as your guide at the site.

After a 49-mile (80-kilometer) journey, arrive at Umm el-Jimal, home to extensive Nabatean, Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic Umayyad ruins of black basalt. Then, enjoy ample time to explore, choosing to tour independently or hire a local guide (additional cost).

With a name that translates as ‘Mother of Camels,' it's believed Umm el-Jimal was a camel stop on an ancient trading route from Damascus. This strategic location meant the site was continuously occupied from the 1st to the 9th century, and consists of Nabataean inscriptions, a ruined Roman-era village, and Byzantine and Umayyad-era buildings.

View highlights like the Nabataean remnants, and Roman gate, Praetorium and fortifications, and check out the Byzantine-era cathedral, barracks, churches — the oldest from 345 AD — and houses.

Be sure to see House XVII-XVIII, the remains of a Byzantine-Umayyad residential complex. Wander around to admire its reservoir, courtyard, and still-intact, 3rd-story double-arched window — now a famous symbol of Umm el-Jimal.

Afterward, return to Amman where your tour ends with a hotel drop-off.
Itinerary
Stop At:
Umm el Jimal
Depart from Amman Hotel to visit Umm Jimal now known as the Black Oasis it was built using black volcanic rocks due to the paucity of timber in the area. Due to the significant location of Umm Jimal in trade trail between Damascus and the south it was used as a stop on camel caravan routes hence the name which In Arabic Mean “Mother of Camels”. The history of this city goes back to the Nabataean Roman Byzantine era. It was built in one of the settlements of the ancient Nabateans and flourished in the first century BC. Many buildings still stand to two or three storeys that it looks as if it was abandoned within living memory in fact it was about 1,200 years ago. After the Roman annexation of the Nabataean kingdom, Umm al-Jimal was enlarged, becoming an important military base, with encircling walls. In the Byzantine era more houses were built, 15 churches and a cathedral; and growth continued under the Umayyad. The oldest church is that of Eulianos which goes back to 345 AD.
