Escape the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam on a half-day guided tour of the Dutch countryside, starting with a 20-minute drive to the windmill village of Zaanse Schans. This outdoor conservation area is situated on the banks of the Zaan River and is home to traditional 18th and 19th century architecture, including several functioning windmills. Watch live demonstrations of craftsmen at work, including a clog maker crafting the famous wooden shoes of the Netherlands. There will be some free time to explore the village on your own, before traveling through the distinctive polders (land reclaimed from the water) of the Beemster area.

From there continue on to Edam, also commonly referred to as the pearl of the Zuiderzee. Edam’s ancient streets and tranquil canals are lined by beautiful 17th century buildings, including the leaning Carillon tower, the Great Church, and town hall. Most famous in Edam is beyond any doubt the public weighing house, where in summer still every Wednesday the famous Edam Cheese is being sold.  After a stroll around this history-rich town, you’ll have the opportunity to see how Edam’s world-famous cheese is made and, of course, to taste it in a closeby cheesefarm.

Finally, you will stop in the beautiful seaside village of Volendam. This typical fishing village with its bustling harbor has been a major tourist attraction as early as 1875. People come from all over to see the small buildings and houses and take in the locals in their traditional Dutch clothing. This is a great place to pick up souvenirs for those at home or a memento for yourself, and to have photos taken in traditional Dutch costume. Your guide will take you on a short walk through the oldest parts of the city, exploring a labyrinth of twists and turns to sites such as St. Vincent’s Church, the wooden Stolphoevekerk and the Visafslag (Fish Auction).

Great guide, awful driver!

We had a great, knowledgeable guide. I wish I could rate this experience separately. Guide 5 stars, driver 1. Our guide was wonderful, friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Unfortunately the driver was very unprofessional. He wore a grayling uniform which was not the company, the van was dirty with coffee cups from the last tour so little unsettling with COVID and he SMOKED in the van while we were on tour with the guide. We and our packages reaked of smoke. Worst of all I left my purse in a bathroom stall in the last village. I realized it 5 minutes down the road and instead of just going back for it he continued tearing down the highway. The guide called the village they had it. When we got back she helpfully translated to the uber driver what we needed and 70 euro later I had it back. The uber driver didn't want to even take the tip I forced on him he felt so bad for me. Funny if the driver of our tour would have went back 5 minutes I probably would have gave him 50 euro at least. Driver really ruined the trip for us between the smoke etc. I wish I could get ahold of the guide she deserves a great tip and my cash was in my purse!

Tour was great. Dedrick is awesome!

Very nice tour through Volendam, Edam and Zaanse Schans. The tour lasted a little over 5 hours and was guided by Dedrick, who was an excellent guide full of knowledge. He had a pleasant tone, was very funny and made sure that the entire group was able to hear him. My tour was in March and over the course of the 5ish hours was quite nice weather. There was a short bout of rain, but Dedrick helped us make the most of it. First stop was at a Henri Willig farm where we saw how their cheeses are made. There was a lot of cheese testing which was VERY good. If you want to buy cheese, this would be the stop to do it (although there are many cheese shops in Amsterdam). Make sure to try the cheese with the various jams. I will say that there cheese shops in Amsterdam that are better at recommending different cheese/jam combinations. Next stop was Volendam, which had shopping and free time. Edam was next, which is where we had a bout of rain. Although Edam is known for cheese, there were no shops here for us to sample/buy from. Final stop was Zaanse Schans with the wooden shoe making demo/shop and windmills. There's also a nice hot cocoa shop here. Overall a very good experience if you want a guided tour. I'd definitely tour with Dedrick again. This tour is family friendly, not too long or too short and you still have the afternoon and evening free to tour Amsterdam.
