Departure Time

6:00 AM
Embrace the quiet streets and deserted attractions of the Athens morning during this “early bird’s” exploration of this ancient city. Whether you’re an early riser or just looking for a way to discover an unexpected side of this busy capital of tourism, this trip is a great choice.

Start your day bright and early with a morning pickup from your hotel, continuing by air-conditioned minivan to historic Varvakeios Market. First constructed in the late 19th century, this municipal market has been continuously open for over 125 years since taking the place of its predecessor following a deadly fire in 1884. You’ll find plenty of sights, smells, and sounds as you stroll through its narrow aisles, observing the piles of produce, watching the busy meat and fish vendors and people-watching the throngs of shoppers picking up their daily supplies.

Continue your a.m. adventures with a visit to the world-famous Acropolis and Philoppapou Hill, both still relatively free of crowds, where you’ll get a quick introduction to these ancient sites. Once you’ve worked up an early-morning appetite, head to Chatzis pastry shop in Syntagma Square, where you can snack on a cheese or spinach pies, accompanied by Greek coffee or espresso. Return back to your hotel after breakfast to continue your day as you see fit.

Χατζή
The establishment of coffee pastry shops Chatzis is signaled back to 1908, when Suleiman Souleimanovits established in Venizelou str. his small dairy, right opposite to the position of his current business store, which has been attributed with longevity. The store sells creamery products, some inchoate sugar sweets, sweets dressed with syrup, “halva” and beverages such as milk and buttermilk which are included at the breakfast menu along with butter and honey – as well as the famous so called Boza, with its special sour-sweet taste. This is the first beverage that makes its appearance in the Balkans, which is made from millet, corn, yeast and sugar.Under these circumstances, and while the reputation of the store spreads by word of mouth, the workshop of Suleiman will remain in this position until 1917, as in August of the same year it will be destroyed along with thousands of other houses and shops due to the incident of the “big fire” in Thessaloniki. So, before the year ends the store moves to 50 Venizelos street.

This is a new tour to Viator but i thought i'd try it. We arrived at the market at least an hour before any 'bustle of early morning shoppers' the market was closed and the stall owners only arriving to start preparing for the day. The tour guide didn't seem to know the history of the market well, previously i've had great tours with Viator in other cities where you get the full history, meet a local stall owner, try a sample of produce etc. so this was very disappointing. I found the rest of the tour equally disappointing. you walk through Athens early morning lovely to see the city as it wakes and avoid crowds but again there was little historical context/information over the various buildings, routes we were taking. the Acropolis and Parthenon tour involves walking up to them but no entry and no time to enter, just to walk around the outside quickly and leave. The pastry shop was nice though.. good greek coffee and spinach pies. very expensive for what was effectively a walk around with little history/context and unique local interactions and experiences i've come to enjoy with Viator trips
