Spend the day exploring the history and winemaking of the region near Barcelona on this 10-hour, small-group excursion. Not only will you have a chance to enjoy the area's spectacular scenery, you'll also gain a newfound appreciation for its religious significance at Montserrat and its many years of winemaking traditions at a local winery.

Leave Barcelona at 8:30am for a visit to Montserrat, a monastery that sits amongst the craggy mountains just outside of town. See the complex's famous Royal Basilica, which contains the 12th-century statue of the Black Virgin, a venerated icon. If you visit during the week, you'll also get to hear the angelic singing of La Escolania de Montserrat, one of the oldest children's choirs in Europe. During your visit you can also stop by the Museum of Monserrat to explore the site's history, or take a ride to the rack railway or cable car for sublime mountain views.

During the second half of your day you'll head to Catalonia's Penedes region to learn about the area's vast wine industry. Stop by a winery, where you'll have a chance to view the vast wine cellars and taste some of the wineries' top-notch products. 

Your tour ends back in Barcelona at around 7pm.

  • During this tour, you will have the chance to visit the famous 12th-century statue of the Black Virgin, and, on weekdays, La Escolania de Montserrat (Boy's Choir). Since the Covid Pandemic, the Monastery has changed the way you can visit the statue and hear the choir sing. It is now compulsory to make a reservation. There are two ways to make a reservation: You can either make the reservation yourself, or we can make the reservation for you. However, if we make the reservation on your behalf, the monastery will charge us 8 Euros per person, as they consider it an agency booking and therefore a group booking. We find this as crazy as you must do, and we have tried, unsuccessfully, everything possible to allow us to make a free booking on your behalf. To avoid paying this fee, we invite you to make the booking yourself as an individual. For the Black Madonna, you can make a reservation for free at Please make your reservation between 11am and 1pm. They will send your tickets to your email directly. For the Boy's Choir, please make the booking at The time is fixed. However, you might find that spaces are limited or even unavailable. Please don't worry, we will always make a reservation for you, just in case you find it too much trouble to book it yourself, or you were unable to book it. If you choose to take advantage of the booking made from the office we will have to pass on the booking fee to you, as we have to pay as an agency. We are sincerely sorry for any inconvenience this is causing you.
  • There will be time off the bus at your leisure, so please bring suitable clothing, footwear, and sun protection. Remember that temperatures at high altitudes will be much lower than in the city, so although it may be warm in Barcelona, please remember that it will be much cooler in the mountains.
  • On certain weekends and during July and August it will not be possible to hear the boys choir sing.

The tour was in Montserrat, and it was great because coincidentally it was Saint of Montserrat's day. It was an incredible experience. Our guide was great. The Tour was in English but I had no trouble following along. The second part of the tour was at a Cava winery and I thought the focus was on cavas, and that it would be at one of the big producers. Unfortunately it was in a small winery and the focus was on wines and not cavas. The person from the winery who took us had bad English, full of tics, which made the tour tiring.

Montserrat is one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen! We got there early in the morning which was perfect because it gets pretty crowded towards noon. We spent a couple hours there and it was good because there were a couple different options to check out. After we went to a winery that was awesome. I learned so many interesting and the wine was great! Overall great experience and our guide Arnau was great as well

A lifetime experience. George our guide was full of knowledge, he cared about every aspect of a comfortable tour. I learned complete history of Montessarat. The vine tasting experience was another attraction. I could observe how interesting and how much work go behind a superb vine in different tastes. Overall it was amazing experience.

The guide Arnauo (Arnold) was exceptional. The guide was able to tell us about the history of Monstserrat in great detail. The Monastery has a wonderful story, when I viewed the Madonna I experienced a moment of peace that I have never felt. These few minutes were one of the many highlights. We took the train to the top and hiked down, that was a good choice, much easier than hiking back up and taking the train down, therefore buy a one way ticket unless you want a challenging hike for the day. The second leg, the wine tour was also very quaint. Barcelona is just now getting back to having tourists and we felt very welcome. Our guide was very happy to be back to work and this was very encouraging, we were worried about traveling and intruding, but people were very kind.

We enjoyed the history the guide provided of the Barcelona region as well as the monastery. The views of Monserrat and the basilica were amazing. Also the tour of how cava is made was Fantastic!! Steven was a great guide who was willing to let the group explorer their own adventure as well provide interesting information throughout the tour. The wine was good. Don’t feel pressured to buy but if you like it, take advantage because of the price you get direct from the vineyard.

Cam was a fun and informative tour guide. We went with 2 families. The tour included the Montserrat tour as well as a Cava Tasting tour. We went to a Cava vineyard call Olive Batllori. Honestly the only negative is the food offering in the Montserrat Cafe. I think the nicer dining option was closed for remodeling so maybe the are better options there. However this is not a reflection on the tour as they have no control of that. Cam constantly gave us history and was very engaging. THe Cava portion was super interesting for the older kids as we went thru the Cellar and learned many facts about the process of making Cava. Of course, tasting the Cava was a fave. We went on a smaller bus that had capacity for about 15 people.

Our tour guide, Cam, was awesome! He had so much knowledge about Montserrat and the history of the area which helped make the bus ride pass quickly. When we got to Montserrat, he gave a detailed 45 minute ish tour of the site before letting us explore on our own for a few hours. The vineyard was awesome and after touring the facility and learning in detail the entire process of making wine, we sampled 4 bottles. I highly recommend this tour! Thanks for a great day!

I had such a great time. It was an intimate tour and I learned so much. Marta was really friendly and knowledgeable! We had enough time to explore the mountain and see the black Madonna. The winery was REALLY great too. But the best part was driving and listening to Marta! She even told us a bit about Catalunya politics! I recommend this tour

PLEASE NOTE: the town of Montserrat is a religious site, It is mostly chapels and monk monasteries. That is the only thing to do there. The views were spectacular, worth the trip- however the town itself was a bit underwhelming, especially if you are not religious. We also visited a winery named Pares Balta and had a fantastic time there. Our winery guide was so informative and knowledgeable.

Absolutely wonderful tour of the monastery and the Pares Balta winery, plus an extra stop at a picturesque church. Marta was our excellent guide who spoke very good English. There were five people on the trip as three cancelled at the last minute. Marta provided very interesting information about the history of Spain and Montserrat. Upon arriving at Montserrat, she gave us a walking tour around the monastery explaining what all there was to see, then let us venture on our own to give everyone an opportunity to explore. We were able to see the choir play, take amazing photos, explore the museum, eat delicious baquette sandwiches at the cafe and purchase cheese to take home to the States. We then stopped at an old church built in the 9th century to take pictures. The winery was the last stop and we met up with a couple of other small groups to get a tour and wine tasting. Learned some fascinating information about biodynamic techniques used in wine making. I can't thank Marta enough. She is very competent and so friendly, willing to share information about Spain, even while driving through Barcelona and outside the city. This exceeded my expectations and we are glad to have chosen this tour.
