8:30 AM

After booking, the operator will contact you about pickup time.

After hotel pickup in Beijing, travel north through diverse countryside to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall.

On route, hear about the history of the wall, and how the Mutianyu section was first built in the 6th century. Learn how a 1.5-mile (2.5-kilometer) stretch of Mutianyu was restored in 1986, and how it is less crowded than Badaling, making it perfect for walking along.

After about two hours, admire the views of the wall snaking over the pine-clad hills. Then, head through the entrance (own expense), ascend by cable car or chairlift (own expense) with your guide, and enjoy one to two hours to explore.

Take a scenic walk between the crenelated parapets, pausing to inspect several watchtowers and absorb the views as your guide shares fascinating facts about the wall’s construction.

Afterward, descend by cable car or chairlift, or upgrade to take the toboggan track from one end of the section.

If you feel peckish, upgrade your trip to include lunch at a local restaurant. Plus, choose to visit Mutianyu village, or go fruit picking in its orchards (fruit season only), before your tour then ends with a hotel drop-off in Beijing.

The Mutianyu Great Wall is considered the most beautiful section in Beijng. Located in Huairou County 72km northeast of Beijing, it stands opposite of Badaling Great Wall, connected with Juyongguan Pass in the west and Gubeikou Gateway in the east. The whole area is like a garden on a mountain top. There are abundant natural springs which feed a great variety of plants and fruit trees, keeping the air fresh all year long. This was the highlight of our round the world trip. After spending the first day on a group tour rushed and tired, this private tour was amazing. We were picked up on time and at the location we listed and driven in an air conditioned, well maintained van to the great wall. Cynthia was hands down the best tour guide we have experienced- she spoke good english and was happy to give us information on any part of China. Cynthia was great with our three kids- who warmed to her within minutes of being in the car. We enjoyed her company that much we booked another tour with her 2 days later! The tour was flexible and Cynthia and the driver were happy to stop off at the local village to buy some fresh fruit and umbrellas. The Mutianyu part of the wall is gorgeous, it has been repaired over the years and is well maintained. There are some good souvenior shops and restaraunts near the ticket office, including a great spot for lunch where we got some tasty, well priced meals. There is an open chair lift and enclosed cable car to get to the top- try the open chair lift- it has amazing views and is not as packed. For those wanting a hassle free day trip to the wall book this- and ask for Cynthia!

Fantastic tour with Sonia. Arrived early at our hotel with h a beautiful mini van for us. Driver was excellent and our guide Sonia was a gem Her English was excellent and she gave us a wonderful tour. Excellent tour and a wonderful day. Suggest taking the cable car both ways as we were able to hike up much further on the wall

Unfortunately it was raining, and this part of the wall was closed, however our guide Cindy rang around to find which section was open, and we went there, No chairlift, so more walking, and big crowds because of the other sites being closed and China's summer holidays, but Cindy our guide made sure we had a great experience. Cindy is passionate about China's history, and explained, in very good English, every question we asked, as well as keeping up a running commentary, not only on the sites we visited, but on Chinese way of life and customs in general. I think we hit the jackpot with Cindy. She went far above her job of showing us her China, picking restaurants for us , as well as being genuinely concerned about our welfare. The vehicles and drivers were excellent, and we felt quite safe in Beijing's traffic, in modern and comfortable cars. All in all we would have no trouble in recommending Catherine Lu's tours for a first class experience.

Only way to see the great wall, our guide, Jimmy picked us up at the Hotel at 8:00 with a driver and took us to Mutianyu - which is the less crowded option close to Beijing. We rode the cable car to the top at tower 14, hiked up to tower 20 and then down to tower 6, where we took an alpine slide to the base. Guide took us to a nice local restaurant 20 minutes away from the wall, where locals go for lunch and we had a wonderful lunch and then back to Beijing by 3pm. Saw what we wanted to see, great, hassle free experience.

Our trip to The Great Wall was incredible! Cynthia was the best tour guide. She explained in so much detail the history and significance, not just of the wall, but she helped us understand China. Be sure to ask for her!

Amazing! Car/driver/guide were great. About an hour drive from Beijing, and our timing happened to be perfect. Lunar New Years day, and the wall was practically empty. We got amazing, rare photos of just us and the wall. Tour timing perfection.
