More than 200,000 people were imprisoned in Sachsenhausen between 1936 and 1945. At first, the prisoners were primarily political opponents of the Nazi regime. However, people that were defined by the National Socialists as racially or biologically inferior were later included.

By 1939, there were a large number of citizens from the occupied European states imprisoned here. Tens of thousands of people died of starvation, disease, forced labor and mistreatment, or they were victims of the systematic extermination by the Schutzstaffel, or the SS. Thousands of other prisoners died during the “death marches” that followed the evacuation of the camp in April of 1945. At that time, approximately 3,000 sick prisoners, along with the doctors and nurses who had stayed behind in the camp, were freed by Soviet and Polish soldiers.

This tour features a visit to the punishment cells, gallows, gas chambers and burial pits located inside the prison. Hear stories of prisoner bravery as well as the chilling atrocities that took place at the camp, which now serves as a national memorial to the prisoners who lived and died here. Your tour ends with a return train trip to Berlin.

It was a very good trip. The tour guide was well-prepared and humorous. Just only short time to visit the exhibition and museum in the camp as I want to see all of them.

Excellent tour guide Gregor. Learned a lot, always informative. Not for kids under 10 - it's a lot of walking and requires some sophisticated understanding. Take food and water.

Booked tour in English, it was delivered in German...didn't understand anything. I do NOT recommend this tour, walk the town of potsdam yourself and let google history be your guide. Walk to San Soussi palace early (no later than noon) and book a tour or tickets and wander the area. This bus tour was boring and not as advertised

Nickolas was a great and passionate guide. His incredible depth of knowledge made the trip as it was over 100 degrees due to the unusual heat wave in Europe. But he made it work and took great care of us. My kids are still taking about what they learned. It changed their perspective on history. He was a great history ambassador for Germany.

The preparation and recitation of history by our guide was very impressive. He conveyed the horror of the emerging final solution- how it evolved from this little way-station to the killing fields of Auschwitz, Dachau, et. al.

Day Trip to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial
    Anne_A
    , Jul 2022
This was a very well run tour with a thoughtful and experienced guide, "Swedish" Maria. Visiting this memorial is a sobering experience and Maria guided us with respect, excellent information and some humorous (all quite appropriate) comments. It is a LONG day (6 hrs total), with a 45 min train ride to get there (and back). There are no food breaks built in, so bringing easy to eat snacks is important! It is well worth the trip!
