Begin your tour with a guide meet and greet at Zoologischer Garten train station or Hackescher Markt train station. Ride to the Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum in Oranienburg.

More than 200,000 people were imprisoned in Sachsenhausen between 1936 and 1945. At first, the prisoners were primarily political opponents of the Nazi regime. However, people that were defined by the National Socialists as racially or biologically inferior were later included.

By 1939, there were a large number of citizens from the occupied European states imprisoned here. Tens of thousands of people died of starvation, disease, forced labor and mistreatment, or they were victims of the systematic extermination by the Schutzstaffel, or the SS. Thousands of other prisoners died during the “death marches” that followed the evacuation of the camp in April of 1945. At that time, approximately 3,000 sick prisoners, along with the doctors and nurses who had stayed behind in the camp, were freed by Soviet and Polish soldiers.

This tour features a visit to the punishment cells, gallows, gas chambers and burial pits located inside the prison. Hear stories of prisoner bravery as well as the chilling atrocities that took place at the camp, which now serves as a national memorial to the prisoners who lived and died here. Your tour ends with a return train trip to Berlin.

Recommend for the ease

This was a really impactful and valuable experience that I would recommend to all. Our guide was knowledgeable and personable, and paying for this guided tour made this easy for us to guarantee we'd make this trip since we didn't have much knowledge of the train system ahead of time. If I was to do this again, I might bypass a tour and ride the train myself plus pay for an audio-guide because I'm price-conscious and it would have been easy to get there, but all in all, was very happy with the easy of this experience and our guide.

To see is so important

Our party of four had the pleasure of having Campbell as our tour guide. He was extremely knowledgeable and brought the experience to life in a digestible way. We took the train ride prisoners would have taken and walked in their footsteps to the camp. There were 12 of us on the tour and he made sure everyone felt seen and their questions were answered. He also gave many recommendations for other activities on the ride back to Berlin. I would recommend this trip to everyone who has the ability to stand and walk for 6 hours. Children to adults- it was so important to see and unforgettable.

Good and lively presentation. Both my mom and me loved the guide and we really enjoyed the whole tour. We had a really good day where we learned a lot about Sachsenhausen and the years before it was builed.
