Interesting drive to the summit with useful geology and cultural information. But too many clouds to see any sunset. Not much information on scopes or astronomy. Telescope was too small and poor quality to see the moon or Saturn. Snacks were good

Amazing sunset, stunning stars

Great overall experience. We drove to the visitor entrance to acclimate and use the facilities, about 30 minutes stop. Then we ascended in 4x4 vehicles to the top of the mountains, about 40-45 minutes. Once at the top we saw the observatories and witnessed a surreal sunset. It was absolutely breathtaking. The temps were cold (even for this Minnesotan) so plan to wear ling pants and warm shoes. They provided warm jackets. After sunset we descended slightly for a stargazing activity, met with warm noodles and hot chocolate. We spent about an hour our so stargazing. We even saw the glow from eruptions coming from one of the active volcanoes. Then we went back to the bottom of the entrance and returned to our pickup location. Highly recommend this excursion.

Hunter was our stargazing tour guide and he was beyond knowledgeable and also had a great sense of humor! We really enjoyed hearing what he had to say regarding Mauna Kea and the observatories as well as the different stars, constellations, etc. I cannot recommend going on this tour enough! It was once in a lifetime experience and I will remember it forever!! Thanks so much for the wonderful memories; I will treasure them forever!!

Heavenly!

Experiencing the vibrant hues of the setting sun as it slowly descended into the clouds below was spectacular! The evening's weather was surprisingly pleasant, there was NO wind... we all gazed in awe of this viewscape above the clouds... absolutely surreal! Hunter was a knowledgeable guide; his easy going & friendly manner made us all feel right at home at 14,000 feet!! We highly recommend this adventure & are already considering coming back to the Big Island to do it again!

Amazing tour. Our tour guide was incredibly helpful. After a stunning sunset we had the opportunity to go star gazing and even saw lava glowing. Best tour we’ve been on in Hawaii.
