Essential Gorge tour (Inc some tips)
Dominic_S
, Jun 2022
The gorge is absolutely incredible, and well worth the cost. It's a must do really, given the start and finish are in different you also couldn't replicate this with a hire car or bus. It's a long way mind you, on rocky terrain, so you will hurt afterwards. I'd still rather this than the 'easy way' mind you, which would be uphill and you'd double back on yourself.
However - wording on 'what to expect' on this listing are confusing as they mix the easy/ normal way I think. The normal route itinereray is -
Early pick up at 6
Hour drive to a cafe if you want a snack for breakfast (take cash)
Resume to start point on the bus. You have to pay 5€ entry per person (card is OK). We started hiking at 7.40
Hike to the bottom. There are plenty of water points and toilets but nothing else so take a snack or 2 to keep you going.
We arrived at the bottom at about 13.30
I wouldn't rush too much as you have plenty of time (it may change based on boat schedules, but we started the return journey home at 17.30)
So well worth stopping at the snack bar at the bottom of the gorge to have a drink or 2.
From here, it's 2km to the village & beach. There will be bus that can take you for 2€ if you like.
In the village, there are a bunch of tavernas but the beach is gravel/pebbles so great if you need to cool down, but don't expect golden sands.
So we just ate and drank at in of the tavernas, which are cheap and cheerful.
Note that your meeting time with the guide is 16.30 to get a boat ticket but you won't depart for another hour, so don't give up your table just yet!
The boat is €10 per person, cash required. The boat takes you round the coast to another port where the coach can resume - we then got back to Chania about 20.00
One other thing to note, it's not really a guided tour, more accompanied to take care of the logistics and for your safety when walking. So you'll walk solo with your group. We liked this but so you know.
As I say, We think this tour and visit is essential if you are in the area, and the tour is good value and the driver and guide are nice guys - the itinerary could just be a little clearer on this site and on the day. Enjoy!

This was an incredible but tough walk. So worth it though. It would have been complicated to arrange all the transportation ourselves, so I think this trip represents good value for money. The guide was also excellent, he made sure everyone was looked after. The coach driver was also very experienced and skilled.

Well organized trip and wonderful guide, Orestis. We really appreciated that we could go at our own pace (my athletic 18 year old son did the hike in less than 2.5 hours, but it took me 3.5 hours). We spent a lovely afternoon on the beach after having a wonderful and quiet lunch and chatting with the pleasant owner, George, of Pension Paradise. We also really enjoyed the ferry ride back. The driver was excellent - we were REALLY thankful he knew how to drive those roads well.
This was definitely one...

This was definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Crete! We had tried to plan out hiking Samaria ourselves but ended up booking this tour and are very glad we did. They took care of all the logistics of getting there and back, including getting the correct ferry and picking us up from Sougia back to Chania. The hike itself was long (be prepared with snacks!) but so worth it. Lots of people came in hiking shoes but we completed it in running shoes, no problem. It was beautiful and certainly one of a kind. Bus was also very comfortable and on time. Highly recommend this tour, thank you!
Great day out

We were due to go a few days earlier asked to delay a few days and this was done with no trouble. As it turned out it was closed that day anyway due to rain.
Went on the Sunday instead and the weather was glourous.
The guide in the coach was very informative and stayed at the back to ensure everyone got through safely.
Very well organized and took the stress out of the logistics for this trip.
Thank me after reading this.

IF YOU'RE GOING IN APRIL.
- Your shoes will get wet.
- Bring walking sticks if you're klutzy, either way its great when crossing streams
- Buy food unless you want to pay for overpriced ones. or Energy gels
- Ideally a 6 hours hike
- I spent too much time looking down trying not to trip than enjoying the view...
- You get back to Chania around 8-9pm
- Defiantly bring a windbreaker for the boat back
- Bring water (even though theres free water)
- You cross the streams about 50+
- I wish the walking sticks provided were free and not 2 euros
- The price is just hassle free if you can't drive or live far away from chania.
- The tour guide is just there to make sure no one gets left behind and thats about it.
GREAT TOUR

Very, very great and sweet guide. A beautiful and though road. We did not have to drive around to many other hotels to pick others up. The transportation time is mostly towards Samaria George. We considered renting a car and go by ourselves. However, I am glad we didn’t. There are many small and winding paths, and it would have been troublesome getting back to the car after the boat trip. Only negative is that they maybe should write a bit more clear how well you should be able to walk. It was no problem for us, however we saw people who were struggling. There are many (loose) stones, a lot of climbing up and down, and walking on wet stones in the water. However, if you are able to walk through that it is an amazing experience, and 10/10 would recommend
Just do it

Overall hiking was amazing!!! Nice view and unique place, but the guide was without any experience, as there was no any information about the trip…. Once we get back to bout we suppose to find ourselves the guide to get the bout tickets which means no organisation at all…

Thank you very much for your comment.
We are really sorry that you had a bad experience but we would like to inform you that the bus that did the transportation was a 4 year old bus while our guide is working with our agency for more than 6 years and has received outstanding comments so far.
We would be more than happy to hear more news from you regarding the negative experience that you had.

Amazing experience! We were picked up from near our hotel, Lovely guide gave a really great commentary on the bus journey about Crete. Then we had a beautiful hike through incredible scenery. The walk ended in a lovely little town by the sea with lots of places to get refreshments. We had a swim in the clear blue sea. Then a picturesque boat ride along the coast followed by a comfortable coach ride - a long day and sore legs but 100% worth it!

Best hike of Samaria Gorge
Mackenzie_S
, May 2022
I’m so glad I booked this trip. It was breathtaking and the most relaxed and organized journey! The bus picked me up from Chania, drove to the mountains (about 40 min) to a cafe, where we could get coffee and something to eat. Then we went back on the bus to the park entrance. The hike took me about 7 hours to complete. It was beautiful. The terrain is for the physically fit- there are many rocks and crossings of the river. The end of the hike is a little village on the beach with restaurants. The boat the takes you back to the bus, maybe 45min. The whole journey was from about 6am-8pm. So worth it!

Well planned tour.. Highly recommended

Timing was very good and the guide, Nikos, really had our back. Hiking poles for rent €3 each from the guide. I found that a good investment. Hike starts from the plateau and continues down for about 16k to the ocean, where you get a few hours to lounge about by the sea before catching a ferry to your tour bus. The drive back has lots of switchbacks as you traverse the mountains and some good photo moments before the sun sets.
Best day of the vacation

Samaria Gorge was my biggest reason to fly to Crete and the best day spent for sure. I was not prepared for such hike and was not in best shape for such hike. But it was a good advice to have at least proper boots.(!!!) So I had my boots and my eternal optimism and I was just soooo tired after 13...14 km. Was not the slowest of the group by far, though! Worth every minute! Took many nice pics. Good advice: even there are multiple places to get water-take plenty of water with you just in case. Specially when it is a hot day like I had. Another good advice: when you want to swim in the end of the hike, use right side of the small port, not left! Left side is very rocky! Thanks for organizers!

A long a beautiful hike over rugged terrain. Worth the journey. We got some excellent photos and had some good conversations along the way.
