Make your own way to Château du Petit Thouars, a short drive from Chinon, where you’ll be greeted by your hosts and whisked on a guided tour of the family-run château.

Learn the secrets of winemaking in the Loire Valley and the importance of ‘terroir’ as you stroll through the château vineyards and peek behind-the-scenes of the historic winery, which has been owned by the du Petit Thouars family since 1634. After seeing the aging cellars where the wines are aged in French oak casks, head to the tasting room to sample the winery’s fine Cabernet Franc and Chenin blanc wines.

After sampling the wines, you’ll have a chance to select a bottle of your favorite to accompany your lunch. You’ll then be left to enjoy your romantic picnic lunch, looking out over the château, the ancient dovecote, and the rolling vineyards.
Itinerary
Stop At:
Chateau du Petit Thouars
Discover the unique history of the Château du Petit Thouars, a family-owned castle built in 1423 by the Dukes of Thouars. Owned by the Aubert du Petit Thouars family since 1636, the castle has been passed from father-to-son in a direct line, with a vineyard in existence on the property for hundreds of years. Visitors will visit Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc vines and learn about vineyard practices in the Chinon appellation. A leisurely stroll will take you to our troglodyte caves where our wines are vinified and aged on-site. You will be walked through French wine vinification practices. Returning to the château you will taste our range of wines. After the tasting you will be brought to a special location on the estate to enjoy your private countryside lunch (salads, cheeses, deli meats, and a special local dessert: the winemaker's tart) on a beautifully dressed table with a bottle of wine to enjoy.

Winetasting with a Duke.

A really á l'aise tour of the wine estate given by The Duke of Petit Thouars. The estate swims in history, of wich the Duke is a part. We got a private Tour of the estate, wich was very pleasant. Whilst doing the tour he is also still managing his business, wich was pretty interesting to see. It gave us a more traditional feeling than they tours given by bigger wine estates. The Pique - nique was filled with fresh paté's/charcuterie/cheese from the neighbourhood, alsof homemade potatosalad (mmhh) and carrotsalad, accompanied by a bottle of his own red wine ofcourse.

One of the nicest parts of our trip to France. Sebastian and Maryella made us feel at home wandering around the beautiful fields. Loved the explanation of the winemaking process and the wine tasting was great .The picnic with fresh bread , cheeses and pate finished with a winemakers tart and accompanied by a lovely rose was the one memory of our week to France that we still talk about. We would do this again in a heartbeat. Five stars and not to be missed!!!

It was a great experience with a pleasant walk to the vineyards and then an excellent wine tasting session. The highlight of it all was the delicious lunch with a lovely bottle of red and the families cute dog to keep us company. Highly recommend.

Tour was enjoyable but should include Chateau. Host was insightful but presentation needed work. Lunch was exceptional!

Many thanks for taking the time to review us and we are always looking for ways in order to improve this tour and service. We actually do have a tour that includes the château, which can be booked directly on our website. You were welcomed by the Count du Petit Thouars, the 12th generation owner of the Château du Petit Thouars for your tour and tasting, so I'm surprised that you felt the presentation needed further work, since he is incredibly passionate about sharing our wines and estate. However we're very pleased that you enjoyed your lunch. Thank you for the visit and we hope you will enjoy the rest of your vacation in the Loire Valley.

Without a doubt, this was a fantastic choice! My husband and I drove up to the beautiful chateau and was greeted by the sweetest little fella - the chateau dog! : He was so cute and walked us around to the back where the tour began. He went on the entire tour with us and even graced us with his presence while we had our picnic. The owner and his wife were very sweet and welcoming to their chateau and vineyard. If you've come across this activity... SIGN UP! It was definitely worth it!

We arrived at an impressive chateau and were met by our tour guide who spoke perfect English. She took us on a brief tour of the vineyard and told us about its history and how the vines are managed. We then went underground into the caves where the barrels are kept. The cave passages were dug by the builders of the chateau to extract the stone for the chateau some 400 years ago. Whlst we were there we were given a brief talk on the wine making process. We then returned to the chateau where we were greeted by its current owner who told us, in excellent English, the fascinating history of the building and we then tasted about six different wines. A superb simple lunch was served together wth a bottle of wine. In all we were there for about 3 hours. We all thoroughly enjoyed our time and I believe it represented good value. It is possible to buy the wine they make but there was no pressure to do so. It was cold in the cave tunnels so take a jumper!
