8:00 AM
The adventure begins with morning pickup at your Heraklion hotel and a trip out of town in a sturdy Land Rover with a small group. Drive along the coastline and into the Cretan mountains, stopping first at the Aposelemis Basin Reservoir and an ancient Roman aqueduct. Journey on to the foothills of the Afendi Mountains for a hearty breakfast (own expense) and visit the forgotten village of Sfendili.

Follow an ancient Minoan path, winding through scenic mountain passes as your guide relates the history and myths of Crete. Get a glimpse into the local shepherding lifestyle with a visit to a mitato to feed the livestock and watch a cheesemaking demonstration. Next, snap photos of the Lassithi Plateau on the way to the famous Dikteon Cave, known as the birthplace of Zeus according to Greek mythology. If you like, pay a small entry fee and climb the rocky steps up to the cave.

After working up an appetite, break for lunch at a local tavern, where you can choose from traditional and vegetarian starters and main courses, served with wine. In the afternoon, observe traditional ways of mountain life and handicrafts at the Lassinthos Eco Park and the farming village of Seli, located on the Lassithi Plateau. Make a final stop in Krassi, known for its natural spring water and 2,000-year-old tree, before the scenic return drive to your hotel.

Great off-road Cretan experience

The off-road experience gave us a chance to see Crete from a shepherd’s perspective. Little villages, goats, sheep, cheese making - all wonderful. That plus Zeus’s cave and lunch on the mountain made for a fabulous day. Our guide, Nick, was fantastic

Great day with a great guide!

Our tour started when our guide Daryl picked us up at our hotel and from there we picked up a few other guests. We drove into the mountains and was given loads of information and history along the way. The whole day was super informative and involved! We saw a bunch of small towns, learned all about the Cretan people and tried some olive oil, honeys and raki, then went to a farm to try some cheeses and finally made our way to an authentic Greek lunch (where our dietary restrictions were easily met). We visited Zeus's cave where you have the option to hike to- or relax if you'd prefer not to hike. All in all the whole day was great and our guide was fantastic!! Would definitely recommend the tour to anyone!

This is a well diversified tour. You will visit an olive oil factory, small greek villages and sample Raki and cheeses, travel on a dirt road and feed some goats on top of a gorgeous mountain, visit the cave where Zeus was born followed by a delicious Greek lunch. Our guide Marios even told us about a Greek festival in Malia which was great. My three children rated it 5 stars ! You could never duplicate this on your own period.

We are so glad we took this tour. It got us out of the City and let us see the beautiful countryside of Crete. Trips to the goat herders in the mountains, beautiful small towns with exquisite olive oil and honey, a hike up to Zeus’ cave and lunch at Zorba’s Taverna with the freshest Greek salad I have ever tasted! Our guide was thoroughly entertaining and the whole day was a pure joy!

Brilliant fun day trip and beautiful landscapes

Our tour guide Ruud picked us up from hotel Mitis Rinela early morning in a great land rover. He made a stop at another hotel for our fellow tourists. The tour took us across the island to the plateau and stopped off at a few sites including the fabled birthplace or Zeus, an impressive cave I recommend the 10minute walk uphill for. The cave itself has steep steps but is open and not claustrophobic. There is a cost of 6 euro entry. We also visited a local village taverna tasting home made olive oil and raki. A local farm (very dirty and covered in goat poo so wear old trainers) to see how they make cheese and more raki. We drove high up the mountains and off road. Great fun but the car does sway a fair bit so if you get easily travel sick I would think twice. Our guide Ruud was extremely knowledgeable and informed us of sites and legends,he also had a great sense of humour. He then drove us to lunch at another village taverna where we had an ok meal. Everything bar the cave entry was included in the booking price. I would recommend this tour to anyone, wear sensible shoes you don't mind getting dirty though. Feels like a proper adventure and the vistas are beautiful.

Simon was a friendly and informative guide who shared his love of Crete with us. We did the tour after arriving on the overnight ferry and it was a great way to get acquainted with the island, people and traditions!
