Departure Time

8:00 AM
The adventure begins with morning pickup at your Heraklion hotel and a trip out of town in a sturdy Land Rover with a small group. Drive along the coastline and into the Cretan mountains, stopping first at the Aposelemis Basin Reservoir and an ancient Roman aqueduct. Journey on to the foothills of the Afendi Mountains for a hearty breakfast (own expense) and visit the forgotten village of Sfendili.

Follow an ancient Minoan path, winding through scenic mountain passes as your guide relates the history and myths of Crete. Get a glimpse into the local shepherding lifestyle with a visit to a mitato to feed the livestock and watch a cheesemaking demonstration. Next, snap photos of the Lassithi Plateau on the way to the famous Dikteon Cave, known as the birthplace of Zeus according to Greek mythology. If you like, pay a small entry fee and climb the rocky steps up to the cave.

After working up an appetite, break for lunch at a local tavern, where you can choose from traditional and vegetarian starters and main courses, served with wine. In the afternoon, observe traditional ways of mountain life and handicrafts at the Lassinthos Eco Park and the farming village of Seli, located on the Lassithi Plateau. Make a final stop in Krassi, known for its natural spring water and 2,000-year-old tree, before the scenic return drive to your hotel.

Fantastic day outside of Heraklion and a unique way to experience the life outside of the tourist areas. Beautiful scenery and a greater appreciation for the village culture. Darrel was not only informative but humorous as well, keeping us laughing the entire time.

Fantastic Adventure and High Point of Vacation

The safari tour with Darrel was not only the highlight of my trip to Crete, but possibly the best guided experience I’ve had to date. It’s difficult to balance humor for such a diverse group in age, gender, and travel styles, but he managed wonderfully to keep the day cheery, informative, and equitable, offering photo opportunities (with a generous photographer!), memorable descriptions, and clever advice for the best way to see everything on the tour, from the most timely routes to take up and down from the Zeus cave to which bathrooms were best along the route. The tour itself was fantastic from a storytelling point of view—narrative arc from morning to afternoon, callbacks that made us feel like Cretan experts by the end of the day, and a fantastic mix of illuminating and grounded statistics, humorous beats, and a panoramic view tracing the people and the presences on the island that have made it what it is today. Fauna sightings are of course not guaranteed, but Darrell went above and beyond to offer us many photo opportunities of the griffin vultures and goats, and provided a wonderful sensory experience of the island’s native flora.

Darrell is one of the best tour guides I’ve ever had - very knowledgeable and a natural born entertainer. The day was fun & educational while also being laid-back, and the perfect way to see more of Crete. The lunch provided was delicious with plenty of options. Our group was a mix of solo travelers and a family, all of whom had a great time. I highly recommend doing this tour!

Good day out Geoff was very friendly and tried his best to keep us involved ( although would have booked it as private tour if given an option) as was difficult to sit at back and listen The lunch was good idea as was very authentic Cretan not touristy May be olive oil tasting could be a bit better more in a farm setting But overall quite good

Great off-road Cretan experience
Deborah_D
, Jun 2021
The off-road experience gave us a chance to see Crete from a shepherd’s perspective. Little villages, goats, sheep, cheese making - all wonderful. That plus Zeus’s cave and lunch on the mountain made for a fabulous day. Our guide, Nick, was fantastic

Great day with a great guide!

Our tour started when our guide Daryl picked us up at our hotel and from there we picked up a few other guests. We drove into the mountains and was given loads of information and history along the way. The whole day was super informative and involved! We saw a bunch of small towns, learned all about the Cretan people and tried some olive oil, honeys and raki, then went to a farm to try some cheeses and finally made our way to an authentic Greek lunch (where our dietary restrictions were easily met). We visited Zeus's cave where you have the option to hike to- or relax if you'd prefer not to hike. All in all the whole day was great and our guide was fantastic!! Would definitely recommend the tour to anyone!

Can't Go Wrong !!!

This is a well diversified tour. You will visit an olive oil factory, small greek villages and sample Raki and cheeses, travel on a dirt road and feed some goats on top of a gorgeous mountain, visit the cave where Zeus was born followed by a delicious Greek lunch. Our guide Marios even told us about a Greek festival in Malia which was great. My three children rated it 5 stars ! You could never duplicate this on your own period.
