Prepare for early morning pickup at either Kakadu Lodge or Mercure Kakadu Crocodile Hotel, travel in a 4WD vehicle to reach Kakadu National Park (park entrance fees not included). Accessible only during the dry season, Twin and Jim Jim Falls are the gems of this Northern Territory nature reserve and are reached by an adventurous, amphibious route. Because of this, the tour is recommended only for active and able-bodied visitors.

Rumble across rough tracks in the 4-wheeler, catch a boat shuttle service through Twin Falls Gorge (extra fee), and finish the trek by foot along a floating boardwalk and rocky path. The athletic efforts are rewarded with stellar views of Twin Falls, where you can relax and soak up the scene on the sandy beach at the base of the falls.

Next, hop back in the 4WD vehicle for the drive toward Jim Jim Falls. When the road can't take you any further, scramble over boulders and walk through enchanting monsoon forests to reach the cascade. Culminating in a natural plunge pool, Jim Jim Falls are surrounded by 490-foot (150-meter) cliffs. Enjoy a picnic lunch here among the dramatic landscape before backtracking to your hotel, where the tour concludes around 3 pm.

Unfortunately, only Jim Jim Falls was opened when we went on the tour but in a way I am glad as the trek to Jim Jim Falls was much hard than expected. The tour guide was excellent and I consider myself and my wife to be fit and active people but we both struggled as we had to clamber over big boulders, exposed roots and rough paths for over an hour to reach the falls. I feel the tour company needs to explain the terrain more clearly in their blurb so people understand what is expected of them. On a positive note, the falls were fantastic and it was lovely to have a well earned swim in the beautiful deep pool and beach area. Lunch was plentiful and tasty.
