Wonderful trip through the mountains and lakes. Mary was fun and informative. Even the most didn't dampen our enthusiasm.

Amazing way to experience The Gap of Dunloe!

My husband and I had an amazing time on the jaunting tour in the Gap of Dunloe - such a beautiful, magical Irish experience. The boat tour was also a great way to experience Killarney. One thing to consider - as a parent myself, I would not recommend the boat part of the tour for young children - as it ruins the experience for others. There were 2 small children on the boat that screamed and complained the entire time, and it was very distracting. Outside of that, we had an incredible time!
Take the tour!

Views, and Travel Like a Victorian Adventurer
LizDitz

This was a lovely day out, and gives an excellent view of the Irish countryside. The views are astonishingly beautiful.
The driver of our pony cart, Niamh, is the fourth generation in her family to drive tourists about, and had some good stories.
The lunch stop is standard Irish sandwiches and soup but the cakes and pastry on offer were excellent.
Then you get in a small (12 passenger) boat, and motor down the chain of lakes, back to Ross Castle.
Our pilot was Dux, who is quite the character and story-teller. But even if you have a more reserved pilot, the views and being on the tranquil lakes is quite lovely.
I say, "travel like a Victorian adventurer" because this trip has been ongoing since the 1880s, and is well worth your time.

Rich experience

Experience included a small boat ride up the lakes with a fun and funny local boat driver and a cart and pony over the gap with interesting stops along the way. We went in the direction starting from Ross Castle so had to get a cab ride there but on the way back at the end of the trip the driver stopped in Killarney, a short walk from our hotel. Actually enjoyed this more than the more popular Ring of Kerry. Recommend them both.

If I could give it a ten I would! this was spectacular! We were late for the tour, thinking that it started at 10:45, when it started at 10:20, and we were walking running, really there from town. It is a long walk. Laura called us, and came to get us in her personal car!!!! Outstanding service!!! We started with the boat ride through the three lakes and two rivers with Dux! Awesome man! The water was beautiful and quiet. So serene!! then we met our trap driver to go thru the Gap. His name was Patrick, and he was wonderful and very funny! I read various reviews saying that the drivers didn't talk and it was boring...... No way!!!! Take the trap. It is a 7 mile walk and very hilly. Such amazing scenery! This is one of the best things that I have ever done while traveling!!! A must Do!!!!!!

The first part of this tour was very disappointing and unacceptable. There were 8 of us in the group. 4 went in one trap and the my 4 went in another. the 1st group was very satisfied. Our horse drawn trap was driven by an elderly woman who spoke only to the horse. No explanations or points of interest were ever given to us. We were so crammed in the trap that the lady was actually sitting on my hip most of the way. Half way up the hill, she wanted all of us to get out and walk so the horse could make it up the hill. This is all happening in pouring rain. Once we got back in, the rein on the harness broke. She had to pull some rope out of the plastic tarp which we used to keep from getting soaked . She used to rope to tie the rein to the harness and told us we had to go very slow so she would not lose control of the horse. At this point she stood in the trap. The reins kept hitting one of the men in the face and each time the driver used the whip, we had to duck so as not to get hit by the whip. We were so glad when we arrived at the end. We really spent most of our time keeping out of her way and trying to stay dry. The boat ride across the 3 lakes back to Ross Castle was interesting. All in all, not a fun trip.

It is a great tour. The Gap is really nice with stunning views. If you can it's best to walk it but you need to be on time to catch the boats. Horse and trap ride is also a good way to go. The road is not the best for horses as the tarmac can get slippery for them. If we would change anything it would be to provide better conditions for the horses. Otherwise the tour is perfect and the boat ride is really special. The whole package is worth taking. All the locals are extremely friendly and helpful. Also big thanks to our lovely horse Richard. We hope he got some apples when he got home :

Do not do this tour, or at least do partially an alternate one. Though we were quite excited to do the oldest tour in Killarney, we were so much more than disappointed at the jaunting car part. That was by far the worst. I didn't know that jaunting car implied that your horsedriver would be standing in the carriage with you, yes, standing, in a carriage where there is barely enough space for 4 people. That unfriendly guy, we don't even know his name somehow if your guide does not tell you his name, means it's a lousy one, he just was whipping the horse and it was obvious that he needed more space, but everytime he whipped, I got his hand knocking on my face, really an unpleasant experience overall the jaunting car. Then the part where he's supposed to let us down to walk abit, he was in such a hurry that he collected us earlier than the other group, meaning we had less time to walk in the so beautiful gap of Dunloe, then he somehow raced through the whole wonderful landscape, no time to see anything, all that to arrive the first jaunting car at the meeting point. We had to wait at the lunch place so long, before the second then third group came. Was there a competition challenge between the jaunting car drivers that day? I don't know but by far the worst tour ever. The afternoon boat tour almost made up for the nightmare in the morning, because our boat driver was so experienced and sooo funny and interesting. Captain Ahab, team Duts. Entertaining us the whole way with old ancient Irish stories and legends, I didn't want to leave the boat, could have spent a few more hours listening to him, what a lovely captain! Would recommend to do this tour booking the boat with ODonoghue boat tours and the part through the Gap of Dunloe do not do the jaunting car, but take the walking tour instead, you'll have more time to enjoy the nice scenery at your own leisure without the strokes of whip in your face and hardly any time to see anything. I cannot talk bad enough about the jaunting car. Had I known there was the option to walk instead of jaunting car I would have taken it.

Amazing tour! One of the best days of our 24 days. The scenery was incredible, and being on the lake was a great experience - the weather was perfect! The jaunting cart was quite an experience - the narrow roads were great fun and it is absolutely breathtaking - I would recommend this a Must See!

Beautiful tour, both the horse and boat rides are amazing. You get driven to either where the boat starts or the horse ride starts. There really isn't any commentary but with the scenery, you don't need it. The horse ride through the Gap of Dunloe is really amazing. Feel bad for the horse that has to pull the four of us through the valley. But, it was beautiful. Then we connect with a boat to go back from the lakes to Ross Castle. Again, amazing sites - this is a definite tour to do...
