Returns to original departure point
Explore the sublime scenery and wealth of wildlife near La Jolla during this sea kayaking trip to explore the area’s beautiful coastline and sea caves. Whether you’re a nature lover or simply looking to add a little adventure to your trip in San Diego, this excursion is a great option for kayaking novices and experts alike.

Select from a morning or afternoon departure and leave from Avenida de la Playa in La Jolla. Meet your guide for the trip and start with a short introduction to proper paddling technique and safety instructions. Then bring your boat down to the beach at La Jolla Shores to begin your ride.

Paddle along the shores of the area’s beautiful rocky coastline, heading towards the La Jolla Sea Caves. As you proceed, keep your eyes peeled for any number of marine species that populate this stretch of coastline. Most trips spot a variety of sea birds along with sea lions and seals. If you’re particularly lucky, you may also see dolphins or even orcas splashing nearby.

During your kayaking experience, pass through some of the area’s unique rock formations, journey through the sprawling forests of kelp and get a chance to explore the area’s sea caves (pending current conditions and your guide’s decision). Finish your ride with an exhilarating kayak “surf ride,” following the waves as they push you back into shore.

Please note: participants should be prepared to get wet during the ride. Entrance into the caves is not guaranteed, as it depends on the ability level of group participants, current ocean conditions and the discretion of your guide. The operator recommends participants be at least six years or older and be able to swim.

Great Tour for the Entire Family!

We did this tour on October 10, 2020 with family ~ 7 adults and 2 kids that were 5 and 8. I highly recommend this tour and we had a lot of fun! The only thing I would recommend is NOT to do it on a weekend. The first time I took the tour, we did it on a weekday and it was awesome. Definitely 5 stars. The reason I give it 4 stars this time was there was a lot of waiting around because we needed some of the equipment that the previous tour before us had. Plus, it was SO crowded at the entrance to the cave. I don't think it's usually this crowded in October, but with the pandemic shutting everything down for months, I think people just wanted to get outdoors. Our guides, Carson and Shawn made the very best of it and were awesome! The highlight for my two grandchildren was the sleeping seal inside the cave and the fact that the guides let them jump off the kayak into the water (they both love to swim). It's a great tour and a good way to get your arm exercises in for the day!

Not worth a trip

I signed up for kayaking to the sea caves. Didn't get near the caves, didn't even get a glimpse of it. A lot of talking by the guides, which we cannot hear too well being on the water with a big crowd. Not a lot of kayaking, just out from the beach and back. Some would stand up on kayak for fun, not really what I signed up for. Would not do again.

My friend and I shared a kayak and that seemed to be the best decision for us. We loved hearing about the history of the area and all the conservation efforts. We had a lot of fun and now our families want us to take them!
