Explore the sublime scenery and wealth of wildlife near La Jolla during this sea kayaking trip to explore the area’s beautiful coastline and sea caves. Whether you’re a nature lover or simply looking to add a little adventure to your trip in San Diego, this excursion is a great option for kayaking novices and experts alike.

Select from a morning or afternoon departure and leave from Avenida de la Playa in La Jolla. Meet your guide for the trip and start with a short introduction to proper paddling technique and safety instructions. Then bring your boat down to the beach at La Jolla Shores to begin your ride.

Paddle along the shores of the area’s beautiful rocky coastline, heading towards the La Jolla Sea Caves. As you proceed, keep your eyes peeled for any number of marine species that populate this stretch of coastline. Most trips spot a variety of sea birds along with sea lions and seals. If you’re particularly lucky, you may also see dolphins or even orcas splashing nearby.

During your kayaking experience, pass through some of the area’s unique rock formations, journey through the sprawling forests of kelp and get a chance to explore the area’s sea caves (pending current conditions and your guide’s decision). Finish your ride with an exhilarating kayak “surf ride,” following the waves as they push you back into shore.

Please note: participants should be prepared to get wet during the ride. Entrance into the caves is not guaranteed, as it depends on the ability level of group participants, current ocean conditions and the discretion of your guide. The operator recommends participants be at least six years or older and be able to swim.

Wow, just WOW!

For someone who has anxiety and just had their wisdom teeth removed this was still an experience of a lifetime! My kayak buddy voted us to be the first ones out and I was like “oh crap, here we go” I thought we were going to tip over for sure as the waves were huge, but we made it out past the red buoy and it was incredible just to be out on the open water, floating about! We waited for the other members of our group to join us and learnt about the sea life and then we continued to the caves! By the time we got to the caves our tour had become a “private” tour as all the other members of our group had to abort and head back to shore. This allowed us to head on into the caves and get a personal experience that will be remembered forever! We saw a huge seal, just sitting in the water not even budging from the waves hitting him and we got to see a few swimmers too, along with a pelican and a lot of seagulls! It was just an absolute treat and I’m so glad I got to experience it! I’ve lived on the ocean my whole life and this was a first time for me! The ride into shore was so much fun, we tipped over just as the waves broke but we expected that and it was just so funny and added that extra laugh to our trip! Unfortunately we didn’t get our guides name or else I’d state what a wonderful tour he gave us! It was definitely worth it, and I’ve got pictures to remember it forever! Thank you thank you thank you! I’m one happy South African!

Fun, but should be called Ocean kayaking and real quick sea cave entry.

Kayaking on the ocean is a rush! The guys that helped get us out past the initial waves were wonderful- so helpfull. Our guide Tobin was great! Loved the history of the tour and his attentiveness to our group making sure we were safe. Would give it 5 stars, but we got to go into only one cave for 30 seconds. Just long enough to snap a couple of pictures and then get shuffled out.

Great trip! Would love to do it again. Tour guides Spencer and Shaun were awesome!! They gave us an enthusiastic history of the ecological reserve while guiding us though a fun kayaking experience. Check-in was easy and all gear was provided. You just show up and have fun! I plan on going back to see the caves when the tide allows, the guides know when it's best and always keep our safety in mind.

Great Kayak tour! One of the best part was the guides. Connor and Spencer, they were a great team. They were fun, educational, personable and always looking out for our safety. We had amazingly beautiful weather! The only drawback was some mild sea sickness we experienced. Overall a great experience.
