Great tour!

Our tour was wonderful! It was great to learn about the people who live in the shanty towns. This tour is a win-win-win. While we were learning about their lives and their culture, we purchased fruits from the market and gave the fruit to the children as we ere touring the shanty town. A portion of the proceeds of the tour price go to help the people in the town and I think that's wonderful. While we were on our tour, several of the locals stopped us and thanked us for coming. It was a heartwarming experience and we enjoyed every second. Thank you!

We had a very informative and interesting Shanty Town Tour. There were beautiful views that can be seen at top of the Shanty Town. The people inside the Shanty Town where incredibly accommodating and friendly. This is a must do tour!!

Great tour of Shantytown

An excellent tour of the slums of Lima, which are situated on high hills overlooking the city. We did not feel at all unsafe; in fact we found the people we encountered to be quite nice and very appreciative of the plantains and tangerines we gave out to their children. Our tour guide, Felipe, was exceptional, providing us with an outstanding educational experience. Make no mistake, the living conditions in shantytown are bad; the homes are hovels and the few stores and schools that are there are third world. Miraflores and Barranco are great places to stay, but to get a complete picture of life in Lima I highly recommend you take this tour. Haka tours donates their profits to this poor community, so your money you spend on this tour will be going to a very worthwhile cause.

Dear customer, thanks for your kind words. On behalf of the community you've visited, thank you for taking this tour with us because we´ll be able to build more day care centers, kitchen for the communities and bring more donations to our children. We appreciate you enjoyed this tour that show the real face, not only of Lima, but also of Peru. We are more than sure it was an eye opening experience. We hope to see you soon! Warm regards.

Enriching experience not to be missed!

This was truly one of the most amazing experiences I had on my trip to Peru. Myself and 2 other female travelers completed this tour in May 2019 during our stay in Lima. The guide was knowledgeable and passionate about the work this organization does in the area to enrich the lives of the lowest income families in the region. Throughout our entire tour through the shanty town, the locals were incredibly inviting, always stopping to say good morning or to make sure we weren't cold in our shorts (we're from a colder region of the USA). To see people in an impoverished community be so happy and thankful, it was truly heartwarming. I believe every person visiting Lima should take this tour. It is incredibly enriching and humbling!

Personally meet a variety of the citizens, leaders, business owners and children in the sprawling shanty towns around Lima. Your tour guides are known and beloved in the community and through them and you will begin to understand the background of these hard working people. You will witness their daily processes, expressions of pride and generosity and extraordinary practices developed to protect and support each other and the growth of their opportunities. These passionate tour guides will expose the sorrow, strength and potential of a people overlooked by modern day journalism. Guaranteed moments of awe, respect, sorrow, self-reflection and joy will fill your experience. The hearts of these people will touch yours and EVERY dollar you spend for this particular tour goes back to helping the five communities this outfit supports. Haku Tours is the real deal if you want to learn about the culture, history and hope these Peruvians share. Favorite tour of my life. I am forever changed and was given the opportunity to create positive change. Thank you Jimmy! PS you will not feel unsafe or find a beggar ANYwhere but there will be opportunities to purchase small handmade items, water, and fruits or vegetables. You will wish you had a few Peruvian coins in your pocket at some point in the journey.

I can't say enough good things

I traveled alone for a 7-day tour of Lima/Machu Picchu, and booked everything myself. I stuck mostly to the beaten path, for safety reasons, but I am so glad I took this shanty town excursion with Haku Tours (via Viator). I found the tour itself to be a great, safe way to see some of the parts of Lima that I was not brave enough to explore alone. The people of Villa El Salvador are kind and warm. The open-air market was a sensory buffet. It's eye-opening to see how the majority of the real district residents of Lima live day-to-day. While Miraflores and Barranco are picturesque and touristy, they don't have quite the obvious native-Peruvian heartbeat that Villa El Salvador has. 10/10, completely recommend.

Such a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful experience. Take this tour. My husband and I were the only people on the tour along with out guide, and we felt completely safe and secure. Our driver stayed with the vehicle once we entered the shanty town, and our guide walked us along, explaining the history of the particular shanty town while including well-managed stops with vendors/business women along the way. We also saw a school and health center that was currently under construction. Additionally, this tour will add so much depth to your Lima experience.

It was a great experience. We were already very familiar with the poverty in areas of Peru and had done some humanitarian work in Iquitos. Our guide did a great job. His English was superb and he was very detailed in his knowledge. His interactions with the people there was full of love and compassion. Highly recommended!
