Departure Time

1:00 PM
Depart your central Luxor hotel or Luxor river port by minivan and drive to the Temples of Karnak on the Nile’s East Bank.

As you travel, hear how Luxor stands on the 4,000-year-old site of Thebes, Egypt’s ancient royal capital, and how Karnak is the largest of its temple complexes. Discover how this vast collection of buildings was developed by more than 30 pharaohs, including Amenhotep IV and Ramses II.

On arrival, walk along the Avenue of the Sphinxes to the gateway, and then explore inside with your Egyptologist guide. Hear how the huge pylons at the entrance were constructed, and marvel at the courtyards and sanctuaries beyond. The deeper you go into the complex, the further back you step, with the oldest ruins dating back more than 3,000 years.

Gaze in awe at the showpiece Hypostyle Hall, crowded with 134 massive columns that tower above you like an ancient forest. Crane your neck upwards and learn about the ingenious methods used to raise them by the long-ago Egyptians. See the sacred lake where pharaonic offerings were purified, and then enjoy free time to stroll around the site at leisure.

Continue to Luxor Temple, an ancient temple in the center of Luxor laid parallel to the Nile. Hear how it was built in around 1,400 BC, and added to by Tutankhamun, Ramses II and even Alexander the Great.

Admire the two colossal statues of Ramses at the entrance, and the granite gateway obelisk whose original counterpart now stands in Paris’ Place de la Concorde. Then, head inside to gawk at the richly carved inner sanctuaries, papyrus columns and courts. Peep inside the atmospheric anterooms, including the chapel dedicated to Alexander the Great, who rebuilt the room in his name.

When the time comes, finish your tour with a drop-off at the start point.
Itinerary
Stop At:
Temple of Karnak
Start your day with a visit to the Temples of Karnak. Walk along the Avenue of Sphinx to enter the complex as your guide explains how the massive facade was constructed. On entering the Temples of Karnak you will see each legacy left by the various pharaohs as the complex grew even larger. The deeper you go into the complex, the further back in time you will travel, with the oldest ruins dating back over 3,000 years. Walking through the Great Court into the Great Hypostyle Hall, it's hard not to be overwhelmed by the 134 columns towering above you like an ancient forest. At the rear of the complex you will find the sacred lake where centuries ago pharaohs and their offerings to the gods were purified. After a tour of the complex, you will have additional free time to explore at leisure.

Luxor Temple
Continue to Luxor Temple which was once joined to the Temples of Karnak by a two-kilometer long Avenue of Sphinx, a portion of which marks the entrance to the temple. Dominated by statues of the great warrior pharaoh Ramses II, Luxor Temple has survived Nile floods, foreign invasion and thousands of years exposed to the elements. A pure Egyptian temple, the inner walls and columns are decorated with intricate hieroglyphics which your guide will help you decipher. Find out how Alexander the Great wrote himself into Luxor Temple's history, and see one of the original pair of obelisk, the second of which now stands on the Place de la Concorde in Paris.

You cannot go to Egypt and not see Karnak and Luxor Temples. Hotel pickup went smoothly. I'm not sure it's always the case, but we had a private guide all to ourselves.

Yes! A visit to Egypt is not complete if you don't experience Luxor and Karnak. There is so much important history there, it's hard to take it all in. I'd recommend reading up about these temples just a bit so you can better understand what the knowledgeable guide tells you. Since so many pharaohs built here, you may want to ask your guide to spend more time in a certain area. Incredibly cool! I definitely recommend taking this tour.

An excellent way to spend half the day touring these two temples. Karnak is an incredible complex, taking 2000 years to build, with many great stories inside on how things worked there. Luxor temple was also very interesting, even though there are a some very interesting architectural mistakes worth seeing. Must see places in Luxor, very well worth the visit!

We have booked the afternoon tour to Karnak and Luxor temples. We were picked up from our hotel in Luxor by our guide, a vibrant young man, baseem, who explained the history of these temples in great detail. The vast courtyards, the huge pillars of the great halls with intricate carvings on them, the statuesof Ramses ll, the rows of Sphinxes at entrance of Luxor temple impressed us very much. We gaped in wonder how the people of ancient Egypt constructed those Hypostyle hall with huge columns. All in all, our journey throughly these temples became lively with the help of our guide as he had a great knowledge of the history of ancient Egypt. I would recommend everyone to visit these places or the tour of Egypt will remain incomplete.

It looks like this Sinai travel Company does not pay its guides and drivers well. There is is tremendous pressure on you to make up to your guide and driver with gratuities. The quality of guide was average. Not a pleasant experience at all. Overall, I would not recommend this tour company.
