Start your day in Maui with a breathtaking sunrise view of the island from atop its highest peak on this daybreak excursion to Mount Haleakala. This exceptional sunrise experience is sure to be a highlight of your trip to Maui.

Start your trip in the dark of the very early morning with a pickup at your Maui hotel. You’ll then continue by air-conditioned minibus on a scenic drive passing the Kula District. and Maui’s rare silversword plants.

Arriving at the Haleakala National Park, steadily climb by minibus up Haleakala to 9,740 feet elevation to the Visitor Center. You’ll see Maui’s rare and endemic silversword plants that poignantly bloom once, then perish. You’ll also witness the sunrise from the Visitor Center area. The views from Haleakala are nothing short of spectacular. Writer Mark Twain, upon visiting the peak in 1866, wrote that the volcano was “the most sublime spectacle I ever witnessed and the memory of it will remain with me always.”

Observe the first rays of the new day slowly creep across the distant horizon. Soon the sky fills with the majestic glow of the new day, and the warm beams of light creep across the island of Maui, illuminating the land below. It’s a sight you’re sure to remember for many years to come.

At the end of your morning sunrise experience you’ll head to breakfast at a local restaurant and then receive a drop-off back at your Maui hotel, tired but thrilled by your amazing morning trip.

A must while on Maui

Perfect! Breathtaking sunrise, followed by a tasty breakfast; couldn’t ask for much more. Our guide Wayne was terrific, and very informative. The Polynesian chant as the sun came up just added so much to the experience. Dress warm and be advised the tour lasts at least 9 hours from pick up to drop off. Some people seemed to be unaware of the climate and length of the tour. But that’s on them.

Site was spectacular. Driver was very good at getting us there in time to secure a great viewing spot. Telephone reps were great when I had advance questions.

Definitely worth getting up in the wee hours of the morning!

I suggest doing this tour early in your trip if you are coming from mainland USA. That way getting up in the wee hours of the morning should be easier since you won't have acclimated to the Hawaiian time zone. Be sure to wear layers for warmth at the summit. Also a warm winter hat and gloves too. The temperature can be high 30s or low 40s but can come with a high wind which makes the cold much worse. It certainly is a great experience but it comes with lots of other groups jostling for picture taking positions. Wayne was our driver/guide and he gave plenty of good tips and was a virtual encyclopedia of information regarding history, plant life and geography of the area. Yes, you can do it on your own but who really wants to drive a twisty mountain road in the middle of the night? The included breakfast was good too.

Do the tour by yourself if you have a car or use another company.

The tour is way too long for a 10min sunrise. Our guide Wayne didn’t stop talking the ENTIRE trip. Even when the other people gave him hints that they wanted to rest. He repeated the same thing 2x. Even after telling Wayne we wanted to go, he talked more. He didn’t let us out until last minute up on the volcano. The other bus tours that arrived after us got front view. Polynesian tour doesn’t give you a jacket. We saw others at the sunrise with warm covers that are provided.

The sunrise was beautiful and the breakfast restaurant was excellent. The only drawback was the cold. The wind is brutal! Wear a heavy coat, stocking cap and gloves!

Our tour guide was amazing. The views were astonishing. They say to dress in layers, what they really mean is, BRING SNOW GEAR. It is exceptionally cold but worth every minute. Just dress warm.

Excellent tour to Haleakala Crater to watch the sunrise. It was brutally cold but so worth it to see the amazing sunrise over the clouds. The tour guide was very knowledgeable about the area and gave us the history of Maui. Highly recommend but be aware that they pick you up at 2:00 a.m.!. There is also a very nice breakfast at a gorgeous restaurant that has a flower garden and gift shop.

Amazing sun rise experience
Jane_N
, May 2022
It was an amazing experience. It was cold and incredibly windy but a clear sky. Watching the sun come up out of the clouds was beautiful! The sun rise chant brought it all together. Our tour guide was instructive, funny, and made the drive interesting. Breakfast was yummy, the gardens beautiful and the little store had lots of goodies for sale. Overall I give this tour 5 plus stars.

This was the best experience I had during my trip, no question! The early wake up is definitely worth it, we were fortunate to have a completely clear day and get a breath taking view of the sunrise. Our tour guide Preston was absolutely incredible. He gave us plenty of time to soak up the experience and I learned so much from him! He also gave us tips on other places to visit during our stay. It was super cold and very windy so definitely dress warm and with plenty of layers to block the wind. Don’t miss out on this, there’s nothing like it!

While we didn’t quite get the picturesque setting for sunrise, the tour was still a success for us. Our guide, Alfred (Al Pacino/Al Capone) was awesome!! Have us great information on the way up and down. He stopped and showed us some natural fauna and a few animals living on the mountain. He gave us restaurant tips and recommendations also. We had a really good time.

Our tour guide Preston was phenomenal! He pointed out everything cool to see and tips on where and how to make it a memorable experience. He didn’t rush it but gave you time to soak it all in. It’s cold so prepare ahead and have a jacket. It was one of our best memories from Maui!

Absolutely worth it. The stunning sunrise alone made this a must-do. Our driver/guide was prompt, wonderful, & very personable. The drive back allows you to see parts of Maui you probably wouldn't see otherwise and our guide gave us all kinds of great tidbits of knowledge about the island.

Once in a lifetime trip with my elderly parents. Was crying when the drivers/tour guides were chanting in Hawaiian language. It was amazing. Mind you, our tour guide/driver Al, is so knowledgeable of the Hawaiian history, so fascinating to listen to his stories. Thank you Al!
